We are a place of never-ending learning and discovery, with programs and exhibits focusing on history, science, and culture. As an integral part of the West Michigan community, the Museum is open daily to visitors and hosts after-hours public events, programs, private events, and weddings. The entire GRPM team works to create positive visitor experiences through engaging exhibits and programs, and a safe, clean, welcoming space. Requirements RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES including, but not limited to : Event setup and tear down (equipment, tables, chairs, risers, dancefloor, stages, etc.) Empty trash receptacles and bags for proper disposal into dumpsters. Report needs and concerns to the appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Operation of the carousel and adherence to State regulations. Assists in the on-the-job training of new staff on the team routine procedures. Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements. May provide vendors with access to areas for cleaning and may answer basic questions. May report issues to management as required. May assist or perform snow removal activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Other duties may be assigned as necessary. EXPERIENCE: Previous experience is preferred but not required QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Proficient in managing time, projects, processes, and resources to produce desired outcomes. Demonstrate strong written and organizational skills with attention to detail. Proven ability to function effectively in a team environment, as well as work independently. Ability to work tactfully and effectively and follow both oral and written instructions. Ability to be flexible and maintain a positive attitude. Ability to operate vacuums and other related equipment. Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies. Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to the trade. Ability to lift, place, and safely manipulate heavy objects. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to move, bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds. The position requires heavy physical work on a repetitive basis. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Professional business setting with friendly interaction. The work environment may involve exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Summary This position performs manual labor and custodial duties exclusively for special events. These events are held mostly in the afternoon, evenings, and on weekends at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. An Event Specialist is primarily charged with setting up (i.e., table & chair placement) and tearing down (i.e., tables, chairs, and equipment) for Special Event activities held at the Museum. These events include large banquets, parties, weddings, concerts, and other events or special meetings. Equipment use involves the repetitive lifting and placement of heavy tables, chairs, stage equipment, and all other customary items associated with having special events, in addition to common custodial and maintenance duties before, during, and after the events. Such duties include traditional custodian responsibilities of dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies. This position has an exclusive work schedule which frequently occurs in the late afternoon and evenings when regular Museum operations are closed.
