Environmental Manager

Position Overview Environmental Manager – Lead the environmental function for the Pensacola manufacturing site, providing strategic and technical leadership to ensure environmental compliance, reduce operational risk, and strengthen environmental performance at Ascend Performance Materials, a global leader in high‑performance chemicals, fibers and plastics. Ascend operates integrated manufacturing facilities across North America, Europe, and Asia, delivering solutions that drive safer vehicles, cleaner energy, advanced medical devices, and durable consumer goods. The role develops a high‑performing environmental team, partners with operations, engineering, maintenance, and ESSH to integrate environmental stewardship into daily operations while supporting long‑term business objectives. Support future site growth through effective permitting and environmental planning. Responsibilities Environmental Compliance & Risk Management – Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental permits, regulations, and company standards. Focus on TitleV air permitting, state air mandates, reporting, and multi‑media compliance. Oversee multi‑media programs, identify risks, implement corrective actions, and strengthen compliance systems. Support permitting and compliance strategies for capital projects and future site growth. Operational Partnership – Partner with operations, maintenance, engineering, and ESSH to integrate environmental requirements into daily operations and projects. Translate regulatory requirements into procedures, training, and operating expectations. Monitor performance, communicate risks, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. Environmental Leadership – Lead, coach, and develop the site environmental team through performance management, succession planning, and employee development. Establish priorities, allocate resources, and foster accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Provide technical guidance to site leadership and operating teams. External Relations – Build productive relationships with regulatory agencies, consultants, community stakeholders, and on‑site partner companies. Manage environmental consultants, contractors, budgets, and departmental resources. Team & Interactions Reports to: Senior ESSH Manager. Direct Reports: Site Environmental Team. Partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Site Leadership, regulatory agencies, consultants, contractors, and on‑site partner companies. Required Experience Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or related discipline. Master’s degree or professional certification (Professional Engineer, Registered Environmental Manager, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, or equivalent) preferred. Minimum 10years of environmental compliance experience in complex industrial manufacturing environments (e.g., chemical, petrochemical, refining, pharmaceutical, oil & gas). 15+years preferred. Experience leading technical professionals and developing high‑performing teams. Strong expertise in TitleV air permitting, air compliance, environmental reporting, and regulatory record‑keeping. Experience managing multi‑media programs (air, water, hazardous waste). Experience working with EPA, FDEP, or similar agencies. Experience managing budgets, consultants, contractors, and resources. Experience supporting PSM, PHA, environmental management systems, capital projects, and permit modifications. Required Skills Strong leadership, coaching, and talent‑development skills. Comprehensive knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting, and compliance systems. Ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements and communicate them effectively. Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and project‑management skills. Demonstrated ability to influence cross‑functional teams, build trusted relationships, and drive accountability. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Working Conditions This position requires work in both office and manufacturing environments and the ability to access operating areas, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and work around typical chemical manufacturing conditions, including heat, humidity, noise, fumes, dust, gases, chemicals, moving equipment, and elevated work areas, with or without reasonable accommodation.
