Debt Management Specialist

Debt Management Specialist (12‑Month Fixed Term) The City of Newcastle is seeking a Debt Management Specialist to deliver exceptional customer service while supporting ratepayers and debtors. The successful candidate will negotiate sustainable repayment arrangements, provide compassionate guidance, and maintain accurate records of debt‑related systems. Key Responsibilities Engage directly with ratepayers and debtors to negotiate repayment plans and explain Council policies, procedures, and debt management requirements. Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records in debt‑management systems. Collaborate with Council’s mercantile agents and other stakeholders to process and monitor debt cases. Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance the effectiveness of debt‑management operations. Qualifications & Experience Experience in debt management, collections, finance, banking, call centres, or customer service. Strong communication skills with the ability to manage challenging conversations and build positive relationships. Empathy, resilience, and a solutions‑focused mindset. Benefits and Working Conditions 35‑hour working week with flexible/hybrid arrangements and an optional 9‑day fortnight. 4 weeks of annual leave, 3 weeks of personal leave, plus 2 additional paid public holidays. 17.5% annual leave loading and a yearly payment.
