Physics-Informed Machine Learning Specialist

Job Description The Physics‑Informed Machine Learning Specialist will integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methodologies with physics‑based applications in engineering. Working on high‑performance computing (HPC) architectures, you will develop novel application areas within LLNL’s national security mission. Roles include advanced simulation capabilities, algorithm optimization, surrogate model development, model validation, reliability, uncertainty quantification, and data engineering. Responsibilities Provide technical leadership and guidance to project teams, balancing customer priorities to meet deadlines. Solve abstract and complex problems using advanced analysis and innovative techniques. Serve as primary technical point of contact for program managers and sponsors, offering expert recommendations on methodologies. Apply deep technical knowledge in computational science and engineering to AI and national security applications across domains such as computational mechanics, chemistry, physics, materials, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, optics, HPC, and related fields. Develop and apply complex ML algorithms including deep learning, unsupervised/self‑supervised learning, representation learning, zero‑ or few‑shot learning, active learning, reinforcement learning, natural language processing, ensemble methods, statistical modeling, performance optimization, physics‑informed ML, and agentic AI workflows. Perform other duties as assigned. Additional Responsibilities (SES.4 Level) Establish and implement broad project vision, influencing technical direction for self and others. Develop innovative research, technologies, and methodologies that integrate applied statistics, ML, AI, and/or uncertainty quantification. Provide subject‑matter expertise and conduct complex analysis within machine learning, AI, applied statistics, and uncertainty quantification. Qualifications Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q‑level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required). Master’s degree in Engineering, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience). Advanced knowledge and experience in AI, ML, or data science with applications in mechanical, aerospace, computational mechanics, electrical engineering, applied statistics, uncertainty quantification, or related domain. Significant experience directing, leading, and executing independent research projects. Advanced organizational, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills for multidisciplinary collaboration. Experience working effectively in a team environment while managing multiple concurrent tasks and deliverables. Additional Qualifications (SES.4 Level) Expertise in highly advanced ML or data science concepts with experience developing applications in physics, mechanical, aerospace, computational mechanics, electrical engineering, applied statistics, uncertainty quantification, or related area. Ability to lead technical personnel and projects, performing planning, execution, and innovative solutions to complex problems. Expert communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and collaboration skills to lead a team, present complex information, and influence senior management and stakeholders. Desired Qualifications Ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access (U.S. citizenship required). Ph.D. in Engineering, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience). Experience developing, deploying, and/or utilizing multi‑physics simulation codes on massively parallel, high‑performance computing architectures used by DOE and DoD stakeholders. Pay Range $175,530 – $267,060 Annually (Level 4). $175,530 – $222,564 Annually (Level 3). $210,630 – $267,060 Annually (Level 4).
