Building Assistant Department: SU Operations Employment Type: Part Time Location: Diaz Compean Student Union Reporting To: Candice De La Rosa Compensation: $18.50 - $21.25 / hour Description Postion Overview The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San Jose State University in downtown San Jose, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators. Mission The Student Union, Inc. of San Jose State University supports the development, growth, and well-being of students and the campus community by providing diverse programs, desired services, and quality facilities to enhance the collegiate experience. Job Summary The Building Assistant works a variety of weekday, weeknight and weekend shifts assisting with SU Operations, Event Services, or Building Supervision functions such as meeting space setups and strikes, maintaining cleanliness of public and meeting spaces prior to, during and after use, client interaction and enforcement of building policies. Under supervision of the SU Operations Manager, and following additional instructions provided by other full-time Operations personnel, and/or the Student Building Supervisor. Essential Functions and Tasks Performs custodial tasks, which include but may not be limited to cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning glass, etc. inside and outside the Student Union building. Interacts with clients, performs room set-ups, strikes, and security, and maintains cleanliness of public spaces and meeting and event spaces prior to, during, and after use. Assists with opening and closing the building, and with monitoring of building usage in public spaces and in meeting and event spaces. Reports on any building problems and/or interior or exterior damage. Assists with decisions that affect the operation and public image of the SU Corporation. Assists with security control for a variety of events as necessary. Assists with safety and security of the SU building and its patrons. Assists with enforcement of SU building policies and procedures, OSHA policies, and National Fire Protection and Life Safety issues. Assists with building emergencies and with building evacuations. Maintains a professional attitude and conduct at all times. Performs additional job‑related duties as necessary. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, American Red Cross preferred, or May acquire them during the first six months of employment (which can be accomplished through SU staff trainers). Online certifications will not be accepted. Ability to work in a fast paced, upbeat, and noisy work environment. Experience in a customer service setting strongly preferred. Must be a matriculated SJSU student and continuously enrolled at least half‑time* during the academic term. *Half‑time is defined as follows: Enrollment Status Half‑time Units Undergraduate and Post baccalaureate Students 6.0-8.0 hours/semester Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Strong customer service and verbal communication skills. Ability to follow directions and/or work throughout a shift or project. Initiative and demonstrated ability to make decisions and judgments within scope of work. Must have ability to enforce policies and procedures. Ability to assist in or perform a wide variety of duties. Some strenuous physical work; ability to lift, push or pull objects weighing in excess of 50 lbs. Ability to develop and maintain relationships within a highly diverse community. Work Requirements Physical Demands and Work Environment The position works in an indoor, recreation facility program‑oriented environment. The physical demands of this position are described below Sitting, walking, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot). Fall (Slip, Trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces. Lifting and carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50-75 lbs. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone. Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrists to operate a computer keyboard and calculator. In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, and may require evening and weekend work as needed. When school is in session - may work up to, but not in excess of 20 hours per week (among all concurrent positions). When classes are not in session (i.e. summer break) may work up to, but not in excess of 40 hours per week. This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders. Employment Information & Policies Benefits This position is employed through the Student Union at San Jose State University which offers employees to receive 40 hours of sick pay during the calendar year.
