Job Description and Duties

Investigative Technologists (Information Technology Specialist III) wanted to conduct technical investigations and provide subject matter expertise in consumer protection, data privacy and security, and technology investigations and enforcement work in the California Attorney General’s Office.  Top candidates will have demonstrated experience in applying deep technical expertise to ambiguous, novel, or fast-moving investigative questions using skills in software engineering, design, product management, data science, or research.

The Consumer Protection Section of the California Attorney General’s Office and its Privacy Unit handle complex investigations and enforcement actions across various business sectors, often with technical aspects such as data privacy and security, artificial intelligence, children’s online safety, financial products and services, autonomous vehicles, computer-aided creation of contraband items, and other technological issues encountered in the enforcement of consumer protection and privacy laws. The Section’s Investigative Technologists will serve as integral members of interdisciplinary investigative and enforcement teams, working closely with the section’s attorneys, auditors, analysts, investigators, and other professionals to perform and support this work as experts in technology. They will also support the section’s legislative, policy, amicus, education, and other work by offering their technological expertise. They will also work to uphold the Office’s values of public service, fairness, equity, and protecting the public from technology-enabled harms.

The Investigative Technologist will serve under the administrative direction of the Senior Assistant Attorney General, performing complex technical investigations and providing subject matter expertise in support of the Section’s consumer protection, privacy, and technology enforcement matters and initiatives, including investigations into potential violations of the Unfair Competition Law, the California Consumer Privacy Act, and other laws.

When using education to meet the minimum qualifications for appointment to ITS III, education must include 15 semester units (or 22.5 quarter units) of information technology or closely related course work. Closely related course work refers to a course of study involving the study of computing, such as software engineering, computer engineering, Management Information Systems, Geographic Information System, and computing technology.
