Work Location: Chapel Hill, NC, North Carolina, US Hiring Range: $44,653 - $60,000 Pay Band Information: See the Career Banding rates spreadsheet Position Summary This recruitment is for two (2) High Voltage Distribution Specialist positions within the Electric Distribution Systems (EDS) unit. The EDS unit distributes electricity to university buildings and hospitals through a 12kV underground circuit network. The selected specialist will install, operate, and maintain all roadways, parking lots, and area lighting (3,319 lights) and oversee underground/overhead electrical distribution, transformer power metering, smart‑grid equipment, and high‑speed networking. Responsibilities Maintain electrical distribution systems, including underground and overhead conductors. Operate and maintain transformers, power metering, and smart‑grid technologies. Manage GIS data and adhere to EDS switching procedures. Operate the IBM Maximo system for work management and coordinate contractors. Respond to service interruptions and perform emergency duty during university emergencies, adverse weather, and communicable disease mandates. Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, truck‑mounted hold diggers/cranes, and aerial lift devices. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent plus six months of electrical experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Required certifications: Valid NC Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and ability to pass DOT Random Drug Testing. Experience working within confined spaces and in adverse weather conditions. Strong problem‑solving and safety decision‑making skills. Required Licenses / Certifications Applicable certifications are required (listing specific certification names). Physical / Mental Requirements Manhole work in confined spaces ranging from 4′×4′×6′ to 10′×20′×8′. Inclement weather exposure; extremes in temperature and humidity. Extended work up to 24 hours in emergencies. Operation of heavy equipment and handling of hazardous materials such as solvents and dielectrics. Good depth perception and ability to work at high levels on utility poles. Benefits Sign‑on bonus of $4,460 ($2,230 within 30 days of hire, $2,230 twelve months after hire). Bonus prorated for part‑time employees.
