The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Wildland Fire Management Division as a Fire Academy Program Coordinator. Do you have a creative, innovative mind? This is one of four Coordinator 1 positions that work in a team environment to coordinate and deliver training opportunities. This position provides support for the coordination, administration, and monitoring of the fire academy program that serves DNR's state and local interagency partners. Assists in coordinating NWCG and fire-related training courses during academies and other times of the year where academy courses could be taught off-cycle to support volunteer fire service and permanent fire personnel who couldn't attend during the assigned academy session. This position has a focus on course coordination and instruction. This position works directly for the Fire Academy Program Manager and is part of the Plans and Information Section within the Wildland Fire Management Division of DNR. The position interacts with Region Fire staff, Division staff, WA Fire Service, Federal Fire Agencies, WA National Guard, and other personnel who attend the Interagency Wildland Fire Academies.
Duties
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the coordination of academy sessions. Includes virtual and in-person instruction. Coordination may involve selection of cadre, course material organization, and course scheduling. Instruction may include the delivery of fire training courses and activities for DNR employees and external agencies. Maintains public and government relations by working directly with counties, rural fire districts, other agencies, MOU agencies, and fire cooperatives. Coordinate and instruct a minimum of three Work Capacity (WCT) tests and three Fireline Refreshers (RT-130) annually.
- This position will instruct 100 and 200-level NWCG courses regularly to state, local, and federal firefighters.
- This position will coordinate and instruct, at a minimum 3 Work Capacity Test (WCT) and 3 Fireline Refreshers (RT-130) annually. Coordination for these courses will include cadre selection, material preparation, and facilitate logistical needs for each event.
- Coordinate a statewide SimTable user group. This position will be responsible for establishing regular group meetings with the region and division staff on the use of the agency's SimTable platform. This platform requires continued use and attention to maintain the software and proficiency in its use. This position will work to become one of the Subject Matter Experts (SME) for the agency's SimTables.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: You must meet all the Required Qualifications and Competencies to be considered for this position. - Minimum 2 years' experience working in a Wildfire or Emergency Management program.
- NWCG qualified at Single Resource Boss level, or equivalent National Incident Management System (NIMS) qualification.
- Experience coordinating wildland fire training.
- Proficient in computer skills using MS Office Suite applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Required Competencies:
- Working knowledge of wildland fire operations, ICS, NWCG fire training doctrine/training guides, and required training.
- Accustomed to working with inter-agency fire cooperators.
- Writing and presentation skills.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Possesses highly functional organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing work tasks and demands.
- Ability to think strategically and creatively, be detail-oriented, take initiative, and function in a highly productive unit with little supervision in a team setting.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
- This position works in an office setting or telework during the non-in-person academy season (typically October – March), and field work during the in-person academy season (typically April – June). Field work can include, but is not limited to, multiple-day travel assignments, up to 14 days across Washington State, single day assignments occasionally requiring long shift hours. Field work will be similar for wildfire assignments
- Travel is required, often involving overnight accommodation, which may include staying in tents or hotels, sometimes up to 2 weeks at a time in a base camp setting.
- A current, valid driver's license and two years of driving experience. Additionally, DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices). This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

- NWCG Qualified ICT4 OR TFLD (Incident Commander Type 4/Task Force Leader).
- Possess a current NWCG qualification at any Unit Leader level.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or higher in a natural resources or related field.
- Skills and experience working with inter-agency fire cooperators.
- Working knowledge of project, event management, and/or simulation software.
- Self-motivated with the ability to effectively prioritize among competing tasks and priorities.
