Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join the accounting and finance team of an established nonprofit organization in downtown Washington, DC. This individual will support general ledger accounting, financial reporting, month-end close, and tax-related activities.
The ideal candidate will have prior nonprofit accounting experience, familiarity with Form 990 reporting, strong Microsoft Excel skills, and experience working with large ERP systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and post journal entries and maintain accurate general ledger records.
- Perform monthly account reconciliations and assist with month-end and year-end close.
- Support the preparation of monthly financial statements and financial reports.
- Assist with Form 990 preparation, including gathering supporting schedules and financial documentation.
- Ensure accounting activities comply with GAAP and applicable nonprofit accounting standards.
- Review and reconcile financial data across various accounts and departments.
- Work closely with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and other internal teams.
- Support annual audit activities and respond to auditor requests.
- Utilize ERP systems and Excel to analyze financial data, prepare reports, and improve accounting processes.
- Assist with additional accounting projects and reporting requirements as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- 2+ years of accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization.
- Experience with Form 990 preparation or supporting the Form 990 filing process required.
- Hands-on experience with a large ERP/accounting system required.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial data analysis.
