IT Shop Manager (Hardware & Lab Operations) Job Posting Title: IT Shop Manager (Hardware & Lab Operations) Hiring Department: Department of Computer Science Location: UT MAIN CAMPUS Weekly Scheduled Hours: 40 FLSA Status: Exempt from FLSA Earliest Start Date: Immediately This position will support the university's Department of Computer Science (UTCS), which boasts a top ten ranking from US News and serves more than 6,500 students across all programs. UTCS is a leading research and educational hub in artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum computing, and cybersecurity. Position Summary: The IT Shop Manager (Hardware & Lab Operations) manages the department’s IT hardware operations and serves as a hands‑on technical contributor across instructional and research environments. Responsibilities include hardware receiving, rack installation, network cabling, power distribution, documentation, and laboratory support. The role also coordinates physical space readiness, supervises student workers, and maintains printing and equipment lifecycle processes. IT Hardware Installation, Cabling, and Power Receive, unpack, stage, and move IT equipment, maintaining orderly staging areas. Assist with rack-and-stack tasks, installation of rails, labeling, and rack organization. Perform network cabling in server rooms, wiring closets, and lab spaces, including pulls, routing, terminations, testing, and documentation. Balance and document power distribution across available circuits and PDUs, maintaining load records. Work with student workers to stage equipment, prepare labels, and maintain standardized kits. Print Services and IT Shop Operations Provide first‑line printer and copier support, consumables replacement, and service‑call coordination. Maintain IT shop tools, supplies, supply carts, and consumables. Maintain standardized shop kits, spare parts, and common supplies for installations and routine work. Collaborate with student workers on printer supply management and shop organization. Shop Operations, Space Readiness, and Day‑to‑Day Support Primary hands‑on resource for space readiness across offices, labs, classrooms, and common areas. Perform minor building support tasks such as signage, light repairs, and fixture adjustments. Assemble and install shelving, furniture, and mounting fixtures without requiring central facilities support. Maintain shared operational supplies and inventory, ensuring safe organization. Direct student workers in room resets, furniture assembly, staging, and cart maintenance. Moves, Transitions, and Lab/Room Changeovers Support onboarding/offboarding, furniture moves, and coordination with IT for cable needs. Assist with lab and office changeovers, staging IT equipment, and timeline coordination. Support periodic reconfiguration work in teaching labs and workstations. Coordinate student workers for physical moves, packing, and readiness checks. Event Logistics and Room Support Provide physical setup for seminars, recruiting events, and special events. Maintain and manage event support kits, ensuring items are returned after use. Coordinate with IT/AV staff for complex technical event needs. Work with student workers on room preparation and event kit management. Inventory & Asset Lifecycle Logistics Apply and maintain physical asset tags on equipment, replacing missing or damaged tags. Assist with location verification and spot checks for equipment. Perform basic triage, component swaps, and light repairs on lab equipment. Manage vendor repair workflows, including RMA preparation and status tracking. Stage equipment for deployment, moves, and room refreshes. Coordinate with University Surplus for staging and pickup, tracking surplus activity. Direct student workers in spot checks, tagging, and repair staging using checklists. Other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications 3+ years of experience in IT logistics, datacenter/lab support, low‑voltage/network cabling, print services, AV operations, or similar environments. Experience handling IT hardware safely, including workstations and servers. Experience performing network cable pulls and terminations with labeling, testing, and documentation. Experience providing first‑line support for printers/copiers. Experience supervising or training student workers or junior staff. Ability to follow labeling, documentation, and physical configuration standards. Comfort with lifting, moving equipment, and working in racks and wiring closets. Strong customer service skills and ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and partners. Basic competency with tracking work using ticketing systems, spreadsheets, or work order systems. Valid Texas Class C driver’s license and willingness to operate department vehicles and UT carts as needed. Preferred Qualifications Experience in facilities operations or minor building support tasks in a technical environment. Experience supporting server rooms, IDFs/MDFs, teaching labs, or research labs. Familiarity with rack standards, rails, PDUs, cable management, patch panels, labeling conventions, and network port verification. Experience coordinating surplus/disposal processes. Experience directing or coordinating student workers in operational tasks. Basic familiarity with ESD‑safe handling and hardware documentation. Familiarity with University of Texas at Austin processes and partners (e.g., Surplus Property, Facilities/zone shops). Salary Range $75,000+ (depending on education and experience) Working Conditions Regularly move and position equipment, including servers, monitors, and printers, using proper lifting techniques and carts. Occasional work in server rooms, wiring closets, and other equipment spaces with noise and temperature variation. Occasional use of powered lift equipment, ladders or step stools, work in confined spaces, and tasks requiring bending, lifting, and carrying items up to 100 lbs. Occasional requirement to drive department vehicles or UT carts for equipment transport.
