The Opportunity
Team Rehab is seeking a senior healthcare compliance leader to build, lead, and continuously improve an effective enterprise Compliance and Privacy Program. This leader will protect patients, clinicians, and the company by translating complex requirements into clear, workable standards; identifying risk early; leading fair and independent investigations; and helping teams correct problems at the root.
The Corporate Compliance Director will serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board, and executive team while maintaining the independence required to challenge decisions, elevate concerns, and act when risk is not adequately addressed. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can move comfortably between strategy, analytics, policy, clinic operations, and difficult conversations.
What You Will Own
- Lead and continuously improve Team Rehab's enterprise Compliance and Privacy Program using the seven elements of an effective healthcare compliance program.
- Advise the CEO, Board, and senior leaders on regulatory risk, program effectiveness, significant investigations, corrective actions, and compliance implications of strategic decisions.
- Chair the management Compliance Committee and provide regular, direct reporting to the Board or Audit & Compliance Committee.
- Conduct an annual enterprise compliance risk assessment and maintain a risk-based audit, monitoring, training, and policy work plan.
- Oversee independent monitoring and audits related to medical necessity, plans of care and certifications, progress reports, timed-code documentation, units, therapy modifiers, PTA/OTA services, provider enrollment, payer requirements, denials, refunds, and overpayments.
- Provide compliance oversight—not operational management—of credentialing and enrollment controls; review credentialing-related denials and trends at least monthly and recommend corrective action.
- Coordinate the compliance response to payer-initiated medical-necessity and utilization reviews and external payer audits with Clinical, Revenue Cycle, and Legal; monitor corrective actions through validation.
- Maintain effective reporting channels, including confidential and anonymous options; triage concerns; lead or coordinate investigations; protect against retaliation; and drive documented corrective action.
- Oversee HIPAA privacy compliance and coordinate closely with IT/Security, Legal, and operations on access, incident response, breach assessment, business associates, and workforce practices.
- Coordinate exclusion and sanctions screening, licensure and credential monitoring, compliance attestations, policy governance, and required compliance training.
- Review referral, marketing, ownership, compensation, vendor, and other financial arrangements for compliance risk in partnership with Legal and Finance.
- Embed compliance diligence in new clinics, acquisitions, new service lines, technology deployments, payer initiatives, and material process changes.
- Build practical dashboards and report trends, root causes, repeat findings, investigation aging, corrective-action status, and program effectiveness.
- Develop the compliance team and use outside specialists when needed for coding audits, investigations, privacy, regulatory analysis, or independent program reviews.
- Stay current on federal and state healthcare requirements and payer rules affecting outpatient rehabilitation across Team Rehab's five-state footprint.
What Success Looks Like in the First Year
- A credible, accessible compliance function with clear authority, reliable intake, disciplined investigations, and trusted relationships across clinics and support teams.
- A Board-approved risk assessment and work plan focused on Team Rehab's highest-impact clinical, billing, privacy, licensing, and growth risks.
- Data-informed auditing that identifies root causes and leads to durable corrective actions, education, and process improvement.
- Monthly operating measures that show therapy chart-audit accuracy, critical and repeat findings, credentialing-related denials, payer reviews, exclusion and attestation completion, and corrective-action validation.
- Consistent compliance expectations across markets without losing the speed and clinical ownership that make Team Rehab successful.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, nursing, health information management, law, accounting, or a related field.
- Ten or more years of progressive healthcare compliance, audit, regulatory, privacy, revenue integrity, or related experience, including at least five years leading people or an enterprise program.
- Demonstrated ownership of an annual compliance risk assessment, work plan, audit/monitoring program, investigations, corrective action, training, policies, and executive or Board reporting.
- Strong working knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid program requirements, False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, HIPAA, exclusions, overpayments, and state healthcare requirements.
- Significant knowledge of outpatient physical and occupational therapy coding, billing, documentation, medical-necessity, and reimbursement practices, including timed codes, units, modifiers, PTA/OTA services, plans of care, progress reporting, and payer audits.
- Experience with provider billing, coding, documentation, reimbursement, or revenue-cycle compliance in a multi-site healthcare environment.
- Ability to analyze data, identify patterns, write clear reports, exercise independent judgment, and communicate difficult findings with fairness and resolve.
- Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) or comparable credential, or ability to obtain CHC within 12 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in outpatient rehabilitation, therapy, ambulatory care, physician practice, urgent care, home health, or another distributed provider model.
- Advanced degree such as MHA, MPH, MBA, MS, or equivalent
- Additional credentials such as CHPC, CPC, CPMA, RHIA, CIA, CFE, or CCEP.
- Experience leading compliance through rapid growth, acquisitions, new markets, or a therapist/clinician ownership model.
- Experience building analytics, dashboards, and risk-based sampling with revenue cycle, clinical, and technology teams.
Leadership Qualities
- Unimpeachable integrity and sound judgment.
- Independent, calm, and willing to raise hard issues early.
- Approachable and trusted by clinicians, operators, and executives.
- Practical: translates requirements into workflows people can follow.
- Curious and analytical, with a bias toward evidence and root-cause correction.
- Respectful, direct, and committed to a speak-up culture without retaliation.
Compensation and Benefits
Anticipated annual base salary: $175,000 as well as a bonus structure around KPIs for compliance. Team Rehab's published benefits include multiple medical plan options, HSA/FSA options, dental and vision coverage, paid time off and holidays, a matching 401(k), life and disability benefits, an employee assistance program, continuing-education support, and potential ownership eligibility, subject to plan terms and role eligibility.
