Outreach Specialist

Job Summary This position is located in the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE), Violence Intervention Division. The mission of the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement is to build partnerships and implement strategies that reduce gun-related violence in the District. ONSE fulfills this mission by coordinating the District’s gun violence prevention and intervention initiatives, using both public health and public safety tools, and by focusing on identifying and engaging with those most likely to be involved in gun violence, providing them with an alternative to crime. This position functions as an Outreach Specialist within the Violence Intervention Division, responsible for working to reduce violence by maintaining a strong presence in communities with high levels of violence. Partners with residents, government agencies, and community-based organizations to build relationships with individuals and families most at risk of being directly affected by violence. Duties And Responsibilities Works directly with individuals most at risk of being involved in violence. Plans and coordinates programs through health-based approaches, which focus on multiple services as an alternative method to decrease the likelihood of individuals’ criminal justice involvement and improve outcomes such as employment, education, job opportunities, health, and housing stability. Documents all contacts and submits reports when necessary and takes appropriate actions to protect sensitive and confidential case information according to agency protocol and guidelines. Maintains caseloads, develops plans of action, and provides intensive outreach to clients and families when connecting them to outreach program services to foster community-oriented public safety by supporting community-building activities in neighborhoods most at risk of violence. Qualifications And Education Specialized Experience : Specialized experience is the experience that is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression. Licenses and Certifications None. Work Conditions/Environment Work is performed in an office setting. Other Significant Facts Tour of Duty : 8:30 am – 5:00 pm; (Hours of work will vary as required by the needs of the program to include split days off and fluctuating tour of duty, to include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.) Pay Plan, Series, and Grade: CS-0343-11 Promotion Potential : No known promotion potential. Duration of Appointment : Career Service Permanent. Collective Bargaining Unit : This position is not in a collective bargaining unit. Position Designation : The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability – Protective Sensitive. Residency Preference : Applicants claiming “Residency Preference” will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
