Facilities Electrical & Electronic Systems Technician
Under the general direction of a supervisor, performs complex tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, modifies, programs and repairs automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Performs advanced troubleshooting of automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Systems and equipment include but are not limited to: branch circuitry, power distribution, emergency power, fire alarm, security, public address, pneumatic transport, televisions, automated lighting, conveyors, and material handling systems. Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects. Identifies, communicates, coordinates and completes projects and work performed in the assigned area(s). Leads team of facilities technicians. Mentors, trains and provides technical expertise to other staff. Distributes work orders in supervisor's absence. Assists other trades as needed; adheres to all safety practices and procedures; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; properly completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices; operates department vehicle; performs other duties as assigned. Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24 hour emergency call.
Job Duties: Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties and at times, other job-related duties as required. Performs Three of Five Technical Specialties (55%): Branch Circuitry: Installs and reroutes electrical raceway (e.g. conduit, liquid-tite mold). Responds to and analyzes local electrical outages. Installs, repairs and replaces branch circuits and associated components: circuits, lighting, ballasts, receptacles, switches and outlets. Upgrades lighting systems and components. Updates electrical panel legends. Reviews building drawings as necessary. Troubleshoots and repairs electrical circuits and relays. Performs electrical system PMs. Performs advanced troubleshooting and repair of electrical circuits. Electronic Systems: Installs, repairs and replaces nurse call system components (e.g., bedside controls, emergency pull stations, staff control stations, processing cards). Installs, repairs and replaces electronic systems and related components (e.g., automated lighting, televisions, master clock, public address, safety and security). Installs, repairs and replaces pneumatic system electronic components. Installs, repairs and replaces motors and gears. Installs, adjusts, repairs and replaces automated systems and related components. Performs electronic system PMs. Performs advanced troubleshooting of electronic systems. Electrical Distribution Systems: Installs, repairs/replaces energized electrical distribution system components- motor controls, transformers, switchgears, emergency generators, panels, circuits, etc. Installs, repairs/replaces variable frequency drives (VFD) circulating fans. Performs work on de-energized systems. Performs advanced troubleshooting/ root cause analysis of electrical distribution system. Developed for Equal Opportunity Pneumatic Transport Systems: Installs, repairs/replaces pneumatic tube system components including, but not limited to; slide gates, tube stations, dispatchers, input/output boards, motor drives, etc. Installs, repairs/replaces waste flow system components including, but not limited to; user display, door magnet, air control valves, radiation detectors, tube assemblies, filters, monitors, etc. Fire Alarm Systems: Responds to fire alarm system alerts. Disables, enables, and replaces fire alarm system components (e.g., detectors, bells, strobes). Installs, repairs/replaces smoke evacuation systems. Updates fire alarm system server applications. Mentorship (20%) Leads team of technicians. Mentors and trains technicians. Facilitates on-the-job training. Coordinates work performed in assigned area. Leads projects. General Duties (25%) Technical Support: Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes. Documents regulatory compliance tests. Facilitates building walk-throughs with key stakeholders. Inspects and tests installations and repairs to ensure they meet quality standards. Becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff. Updates building drawings. Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs. Generates permits (e.g., above ceiling, burn, penetration). Troubleshoots and resolves field problems. Participates on emergency response teams. Communication / Recordkeeping: Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders. Submits material and equipment purchase requests (e.g., eRequests, eMaterials). Provides feedback on materials. Creates estimates for small projects. Informs customers when tasks are completed. Communicates and initiates work order escalation, if needed. Other Departmental Duties: Participates in professional development/ continuing education activities: obtaining and maintaining required certifications, soft skill development, etc. Interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department. Participates in meetings, trainings, and orientations. May participate on committees. Performs other duties as assigned.
Major Work Characteristics: Ability to: 1) read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as built drawings, 2) read, understand and apply safety standards and practices (e.g., hazard communication, infection prevention, lock-out/ tag-out), 3) read, interpret and apply technical manuals and systems specifications, 4) follow applicable trade specific codes, standards and regulations, 5) learn technical skills and apply new knowledge to solve problems, 6) use resistance and power equations to solve problems, 7) select and use hand, power and machine tools, 8) locate, disable and enable electrical disconnects and plumbing shut-offs, 9) establish and maintain interpersonal relationships, 10) maintain a clean and safe work environment, 11) add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers; calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; use algebra, geometry and trigonometry, 12) instruct/teach others, assist with the development of training classes, and coach and develop others, 13) provide guidance and expert advice about technical systems or processes, 14) estimate the resources (e.g., time, materials) required to perform a task, 15) manage small projects with defined scope and timeline, 16) perform quality control analysis/evaluate service quality or system performance, Skills: 17) problem solving and systems analysis,18) troubleshooting systems (e.g., branch circuit, electric distribution, electronic, fire alarm pneumatic transport), 19) conflict management (e.g. handle complaints, identify issues and negotiate with others), 20) basic computer (e.g., data entry, data retrieval, electronic communication, internet searches, navigate and retrieve information from websites, create basic reports using Microsoft Word, format, analyze, sort and filter data using spreadsheet software), 21) customer service (e.g. demonstrate empathy, meet quality standards, actively look for ways to help others), 22) planning and prioritizing work, 23) resource management, 24) team building, Knowledge of: 25) AC/DC theory, 26) electrical concepts used in Ohm's Law, 27) electric and electronic controls, 28) PLCs, 29) fire alarm Electrical and Electronics Systems Technician Senior Effective Date: 08/25/24 Classification Specification for Classified Civil Service Developed for Equal Opportunity system design and operation, 30) pneumatic transport system design and operation, 31) electrical distribution system design and operation, 32) relationship of preventive maintenance and equipment life-cycle Minimum Classification Requirements: High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience; two years' experience in electrical or electronic systems with a minimum of one year analyzing, troubleshooting and repairing electronic equipment and circuits, electrical and electronic logic circuits and/or computer hardware, software, and microprocessor controlled equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience; obtain the following during probationary period: valid OSHA 30-hour General Industry Safety and Health card, basic understanding of university building design standards (BDS) related to the maintenance and repair of building systems and equipment, and basic understanding of the project process as managed by FOD Design and Construction; successful completion of probationary period includes demonstrated competence in at least three of the following technical specialties as determined by the needs of the department: branch circuity, electronic systems, electrical distribution systems, pneumatic transport systems, and fire alarm systems. May require valid State of Ohio driver license.
Desired Qualifications:
Associates/technical degree or certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field. Physical Requirements: Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors. Climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time. Unusual Work Conditions: May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time. May work in cramped spaces.
