Position Summary

The Transportation Support Technician plays a vital role in supporting the safety, reliability, and readiness of LIFE Senior Services' transportation fleet. This position is responsible for performing routine vehicle inspections, basic preventative maintenance, and general fleet support that does not require the services of a licensed mechanic. The Transportation Support Technician also assists with basic roadside support in safe environments, transports vehicles to and from maintenance facilities, moves vehicles into the transportation depot at the end of each day, and helps ensure all fleet vehicles are clean, organized, and ready for daily operations.

This position works closely with the Transportation Manager to identify maintenance needs, coordinate repairs, and promote a safe transportation program for participants and employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following represents the primary duties performed by this position but is not intended to be all-inclusive.

Fleet Readiness and Preventative Maintenance

• Conduct routine inspections of fleet vehicles to ensure they are safe and operational.
• Replace windshield wiper blades as needed.
• Replace exterior light bulbs, including brake lights, headlights, turn signals, and marker lights.
• Check and replenish approved vehicle fluids, including windshield washer fluid and other basic fluids as directed.
• Check and maintain proper tire pressure.
• Install or replace other minor vehicle components that do not require advanced mechanical training.
• Wash, clean, and maintain the appearance of fleet vehicles as assigned.
• Fuel vehicles as needed to ensure readiness for scheduled transportation routes.
• Report maintenance concerns requiring professional repair to the Transportation Manager.
• Maintain accurate vehicle inspection and maintenance records.

Fleet Operations

• Move fleet vehicles into the transportation depot or designated parking area at the end of each day.
• Transport vehicles to and from repair facilities, inspection sites, or maintenance vendors as needed.
• Assist with scheduling and coordinating routine preventative maintenance appointments.
• Help maintain an organized, safe, and efficient fleet operation.
• Ensure vehicles are properly stocked with required safety equipment and supplies.

Basic Roadside Assistance

• Respond to transportation staff requiring basic roadside assistance as directed by the Transportation Manager.
• Provide basic roadside assistance, including changing flat tires, jump-starting vehicles, replacing windshield wiper blades, or replacing exterior light bulbs when the vehicle is located in a safe environment, such as a parking lot, participant residence, or other off-road location where the work can be completed safely.
• Assess vehicle concerns and communicate repair needs requiring a qualified mechanic or outside vendor.
• Follow all organizational safety procedures while responding to roadside situations.

Safety and Compliance

• Complete routine pre- and post-service vehicle inspections as assigned.
• Promptly report vehicle damage, safety concerns, accidents, or equipment issues.
• Follow all LIFE Senior Services vehicle operation policies and applicable traffic laws.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment.
• Assist in maintaining compliance with organizational fleet safety standards.

General Responsibilities

• Provide courteous and professional service to internal departments and transportation staff.
• Maintain confidentiality of participant and organizational information.
• Attend required meetings, safety training, and professional development activities.
• Assist with special transportation projects as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record that meets LIFE Senior Services' insurance requirements.
• Ability to safely operate passenger vehicles, vans, wheelchair-accessible vehicles, and small buses.
• Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and the safe use of hand tools.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in fleet support, transportation, facilities maintenance, automotive support, or a related field.
• Experience performing basic vehicle maintenance and preventative maintenance.
• Experience providing basic roadside assistance in safe environments.
• Knowledge of vehicle inspection procedures

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic mechanical aptitude.
• Ability to safely perform routine preventative maintenance and minor vehicle repairs within the scope of the position.
• Ability to recognize when repairs require a licensed mechanic or outside vendor.
• Ability to safely change tires, jump-start vehicles, and perform other basic roadside assistance in appropriate environments.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, and reach.
• Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
• Frequently enter and exit vehicles throughout the workday.
• Operate hand tools and basic maintenance equipment safely.
• Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Occasionally work evenings or weekends based on operational needs.

Working Conditions

This position works in both indoor and outdoor environments and is regularly exposed to changing weather conditions, vehicle traffic, automotive equipment, and maintenance-related activities. The Transportation Support Technician must exercise sound judgment and follow all organizational safety procedures when performing assigned duties. Roadside assistance is limited to situations where the vehicle is in a safe location and the work can be completed without exposing the employee to unnecessary risk.
