Legal Administrative Specialist

Summary The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York is responsible for investigating, prosecuting, and deterring violations of federal statutes, enforcing and representing the interests of the United States in civil litigation, upholding civil, constitutional, and victims' rights, and fostering partnerships with other federal, state, local government agencies and community groups. Duties This Legal Administrative Specialist provides a wide range of technical, analytical, and legal support services to the Civil Division of the Eastern District of New York. Selected candidates will join a well‑respected team responsible for providing support to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Brooklyn, New York. Typical Work Assignments Conduct in‑depth analysis of specialized legal topics and points of law. Draft and/or prepare letters, legal documents, forms, and reports as requested. Manage and maintain discovery and other documentation in electronic and hard‑copy formats that pertain to cases. Provide advanced support for complex civil cases involving large volumes of electronic case materials, including processing, organizing, reviewing, producing, and presenting electronic discovery. Advise attorneys, legal support staff, and client agency members on electronic discovery strategies, litigation support tools, technical requirements, production specifications, and best practices for managing complex or non‑standard electronic evidence. Provide assistance for case preparation and presentation. Requirements – Conditions of Employment You must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing). Continued employment requires a favorable background investigation. Selective Service: Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service. A probationary period may be required. All Federal employees must receive Federal salary payments by direct deposit. Additional selections may be made using this announcement as needed. Current or former Federal employees applying under merit promotion must meet applicable time‑in‑grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date and prior to placement. Qualifications – Minimum Qualifications To be minimally qualified for this position, demonstrate required specialized experience for the respective grade level. For the GS‑12 level, at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑11 level in the Federal service (public or private sectors) performing three of the following four duties: Provide expert‑level analysis and advice regarding technological tools or solutions for litigation support of federal cases. Analyze litigation support project requirements to define or understand project objectives, sequence of events, work effort, durations of tasks, and/or associated resource requirements. Process electronically stored information in various electronic file formats to prepare it for case team review, production in discovery, and/or filing or presentation as exhibits in court or other litigation uses. Maintain document review databases of voluminous discovery and/or case materials. In describing your experience, be clear and specific. Experience includes paid and unpaid activities, volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps), and other organizations. Volunteer work earns credit for qualifying experience when supported by the resume. Time‑in‑Grade Requirements Merit promotion applicants must submit an SF‑50 showing time‑in‑grade eligibility and reflecting title, series, and grade. No award SF‑50 is accepted; recommended include promotions and step increases. Applicants who fail to meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days after the closing date will not be considered further. Education This position does not have an education qualification requirement. Additional Information Relocation expenses are not authorized. Background Investigation Employees must complete a background investigation for a clearance as a condition of placement in this high‑risk position. The review includes financial issues (delinquencies, child support, tax obligations), criminal offenses, and illegal drug use or possession. Current or Former Political Appointees Employment offers for current or former political appointees (Schedule A or C, Non‑career SES, or Presidential appointees) require OPM authorization. Disclosed information must be provided to the Human Resources Office. Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) Eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees receive selection priority over other candidates.
