Summary

Physician Assistant With the supervision of a Physician (as per O.R.C. 4730) the PA‑C provides medical care, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to patients with complex, acute, and chronic health conditions. This medical care may be in a variety of clinical settings. The PA assesses health status by obtaining relevant health and medical history, performs a physical exam based upon age and patient history, identifies significant health and medical risk factors, orders, interprets and evaluates laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies to assess the patient’s clinical problems and health care needs. The PA develops a diagnosis, develops a treatment plan with the patient and significant others, performs diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification, law and Akron Children’s Hospital privileges, may prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by prescriptive authority, develops a patient education plan, collaborates with nursing, medical and other healthcare team members regularly, and may serve as a clinical preceptor for PA students. Other duties as assigned are performed. Outpatient practice emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention and diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems. The PA participates in quality monitoring through the review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes bi-annually to assure quality care and per ORC requirements via the Focused Professional Performance Evaluation (FPPE) and Ongoing Professional Performance Evaluation (OPPE) for Advanced Practice Providers as part of Joint Commission requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical care to patients with complex acute, critical, and chronic health conditions, including delivery of acute services. This includes neonatal, pediatric, and adult populations in settings that require complex monitoring and therapies, high‑intensity medical intervention, or continuous vigilance.
• Participate in quality monitoring through review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes bi-annually to assure quality care and meet ORC requirements (FPPE and OPPE).
• Identify patient/family needs for discharge, including education, equipment, home care, transportation needs or referrals.
• Write prescriptions within scope of practice.
• Communicate appropriately with the primary care physician.
• Select and order appropriate tests under guidance of physician.
• Write orders in patient chart, cosigned by a physician as needed.
• Participate in emergency treatment and triage appropriately.
• Maintain confidentiality of all department and patient matters.
• Communicate with families providing written materials and videos when appropriate.
• Competently assist and perform treatments/procedures for patients on the service.
• Competently administer medications.

Position Specific Competencies/Indicators

• Evaluate care daily when making rounds.
• Document assessment, plan, care provided, teaching and discharge planning.
• Complete Bureau of Workers Compensation forms.
• Monitor and intervene to promote patient safety, notify supervisor and document events appropriately.
• Offer expertise to staff and residents, providing reference materials when appropriate.
• Participate in ongoing education for nurses and physicians through presentations and in‑services.
• Assist with development of educational materials.
• Modify practice utilizing current research.
• Call coverage requirements vary; for a full‑time APP in Interventional Radiology, the typical call coverage requirement is every fourth week/end but may vary based on departmental staffing levels.

Other Information

• Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies preferred.
• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
• Licensed as a Physician Assistant in Ohio, current NCCPA certification.
• Must have a supervision agreement filed, current certificate to practice and certificate to prescribe (or eligible) by Ohio Board of Medicine.
• Must obtain credentialing as an active member of medical staff and appropriate medical staff privileges.
• Current Health Care Provider BLS training is required.
• Individuals hired without a MS degree and those hired without a certificate to prescribe (or CTP eligible) must actively pursue and obtain a MS degree/certificate to prescribe.
• Excellent critical thinking, self‑motivation and interpersonal communication skills essential.
• On‑call work when needed.
