Job Summary Employees will safeguard lives and property by enforcing applicable laws, regulations and promote good university and community relations. Testing Date Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will advance to the State University Civil Service Knowledge Test, which will be administered on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Northeastern Illinois University. Eligible candidates will receive an email from HR with testing information. Job Description 1. Patrol Foot and vehicular patrol of buildings, grounds, parking lots, off campus facilities and city streets in the vicinity of the campus. A. General assistance to faculty, staff, students, visitors, and members of the neighboring community including: Frequenting offices, departments, and common areas addressing university constituents, various student organizations and other faculty and staff to promote the department's community relations programs. Endorsing and promoting the Problem Solving/Community Oriented Policing philosophy within our organization and community. Advising members of the community how they can assist in crime prevention strategies and techniques. Detecting hazardous conditions, natural or man-made, that would constitute a threat to the safety and well-being of the community. B. Conduct initial and follow up investigations of crimes and events including: Locating and interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects Generating and pursuing investigative leads Reviewing reports, documents, files and other data to evaluate criminal activity and identify perpetrators. Accurately and thoroughly documenting relevant evidentiary facts, occurrences and activities. Working with the State's Attorney's office to obtain necessary subpoenas, warrants, and other legal processes. Serving criminal process to include warrants and subpoenas. Exercises the lawful use of arrest, force, search, and seizure powers. Appearing in criminal and on some occasions, civil court for subpoenas are issued. testimony when Working with juvenile officers in the enforcement of laws, which are violated by those individuals younger than 17 years of age to include proper agency response and direction. Coordinating with state and local police agencies for investigations. C. Protect Crime Scene and Collect Evidence and Information including: Conducting or coordinating investigative activities at crime scenes Identifying and preserving the scene for integrity purposes. Conducting initial interviews of victims, witnesses, and/or suspects. Identifies, collects, and evaluates evidence. Recovering and inventorying stolen, confiscated and recovered property. Tagging evidence and confiscated property. Transports and records all physical evidence into safekeeping; safeguarding the chain of evidence. D. Enforcing Traffic Laws and Conducting Traffic Investigations including: Investigating suspicious vehicles. Determining probable cause to execute a traffic stop. Stopping vehicles to cite, warn or arrest occupants for violations of the ILCS. Directing a moving vehicle out of a line of traffic to execute a vehicle stop. Executing felony motor stops. Checking registration for wants and warrants through L.E.A.D.S./NCIC. Completing citations, bond sheets. Investigating hit and run violations. Investigating traffic accident scene to identify point of impact. Collecting physical evidence from the accident scene. Completing Illinois Traffic Crash Reports. Protecting traffic accident physical evidence for collection. Protecting traffic accident scenes to prevent additional accidents at the scene. 2. Reporting and other Documentation Completes all necessary reports in a timely manner including: Completing initial offense/incident reports Completing arrest reports Completing criminal investigation reports of felonies and misdemeanors Record confessions, witness statements and other accounts in writing Completing arrest and complaint forms 3. Conduct Interviews and Interrogations / Conduct Search and Seizure Interrogate adult suspects Interview complainants, witnesses, etc. Interview informants Observe verbal and non-verbal communication Conduct field search of arrested persons Conduct frisk or pat down Search automobiles under independent probable cause Search premises/property incident to arrest Search premises or property in hot pursuit/emergency situations Search premises/property with consent Search premises/property with warrant Seize contraband 4. Arrest and Detain Persons, Physical Force to Control Persons and Transport Persons in Custody Advise persons of constitutional rights (Miranda Warning) Arrest persons with a warrant Arrest persons without a warrant (non-traffic) Conduct temporary detention of suspicious persons (stop and frisk) Obtain arrest warrants Control hostile groups (demonstrators, rioters etc.) Use devices to control or take down suspects Subdue physically attacking person Use weaponless defense tactics Disann violent armed suspect Subdue person resisting arrest Operate vehicle to transport prisoners Search vehicle for weapons and/or contraband (e.g. before and after prisoner transport) 5. Services to the University Community & Emergency Assistance Requests for service Lock and unlock doors Money escorts Personal escorts Fingerprinting Motorists Assists Medical Assists Emergency Notifications Securing accident and disaster scenes to include applying National Incident Management System concepts during emergency response situations. Assume role of Incident Commander during emergency response situations Assisting in the evacuation of occupants in emergencies and fire drills Administering first aid to injured persons Administering cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Assisting with disabled individuals 6. Administrative Duties Provide leadership and training to new/temporary officers on campus Provide specific training to fellow officers in specialized job related fields Act as officer in charge of patrol in the absence of a ranking supervisor Requests and maintains department issued equipment and gear Performs related duties as assigned. Minimal Qualifications High school graduation or equivalent Possession of a valid driver's license No record of conviction of a felony or misdemeanors as identified in the Illinois Police Training Act (50 ILCS705etseq.), or a crime involving moral turpitude Eligibility for bonding, if required by the employing institution Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Officers' Training course as prescribed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, if required by the employing institution. All recruit law enforcement officers who successfully complete this course after September1,1984 are required to successfully pass the Law Enforcement Officers' Certification Examination. Applicants lacking such training at time of appointment will be required to complete such requirement during, and as a part of, their probationary period of employment in this class. At least 21 years of age upon employment. (This requirement may be further defined by local recruitment, examination, and employment policies, provided age requirements have been met with regard to all other applicable state and federal regulations in this respect.) Required Applicant must have taken and passed the Joliet Junior College POWER Test, Triton College's POWER Test, NIPSTA POWER Test, or Southwestern Illinois College Police Academy (SWIC) POWER Test and Human Resources has confirmed the POWER Test was passed at one of the listed locations within the past 6 months as evidenced by a POWER Test card issued to the applicant. NOTE Persons who have not successfully completed the mandated firearm training course, as approved and recognized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, must complete the course during their probationary period. Police officers are not authorized to carry a service weapon until successfully completing such training. Application Instructions The application/resume must include a complete work history and educational background, which will be evaluated for the position. The application must include a POWER Test ID card within the past 6 months. Other areas that will be evaluated include: required performance standards, background check and psychological evaluation. A Veteran should submit a copy of their DD214, DD215 or NGB22 for additional consideration. Please include 3 Professional References. Functional Expectations Ability to walk/stand during patrolling duty. Ability to wear utility belt weighing up to 15 pounds as part of the official uniform. Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to maximum physical ability during emergency situations. Ability to bend, crouch, kneel and reach overhead. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Shifts Available 6:00 am - 2:00 pm 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm 10:00 pm - 6:00 am Salary Range $33.01/hour Benefits University employees may be eligible for a variety of State of Illinois benefits.
