School Security / School Safety Personnel

Youngstown City School District is seeking qualified applicants for school security and school safety positions for the upcoming school year. The District is reviewing applicants for multiple security/safety role classifications. Final title, assignment, authority, and rate of pay will be determined based on each applicant's verified credentials, law enforcement status, training, certification, and District needs.

Possible role classifications may include:

• School Resource Officer — SRO For individuals actively assigned through a law enforcement agency and appropriate MOU.
• School Safety Officer — SSO For qualified retired law enforcement personnel who meet applicable credential, qualification, and District requirements.
• District Security Officer - DSO For individuals with qualifying law enforcement training, OPOTA/basic peace officer training, prior peace officer service, or other applicable security-related credentials.
• Unarmed Security / Unarmed Safety Support For applicants who may not have current or prior law enforcement experience but are qualified to support building safety, supervision, monitoring, access control, event coverage, and student/staff safety in an unarmed capacity.

Applicants without current or prior law enforcement experience may be considered for unarmed security/safety support roles.

Duties may vary depending on final role classification, credentials, and assignment. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

• Support a safe and orderly school environment for students, staff, families, and visitors.
• Provide visible security/safety presence during the school day, arrival, dismissal, events, and other assigned times.
• Monitor hallways, entrances, parking lots, common areas, and other assigned locations.
• Assist with visitor management, access control, and building safety procedures.
• Support administrators during safety-related incidents, student conflicts, emergencies, and building concerns.
• Assist with de-escalation when appropriate and within the scope of the assigned role.
• Communicate safety concerns promptly to building administration and/or security leadership.
• Document incidents, observations, and safety concerns as directed.
• Support emergency drills, crisis response procedures, and District safety protocols.
• Assist with athletic events, evening events, special events, and other District activities as assigned.
• Coordinate with law enforcement, emergency responders, and District administration when appropriate.
• Maintain professional conduct, confidentiality, and appropriate boundaries with students, staff, families, and the public.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Not all school security/safety personnel will have the same authority. Final authority, duties, title, and assignment will depend on the individual's verified credentials and role classification.

Unless specifically assigned through a law enforcement agency and appropriate MOU, school security/safety personnel are not acting as School Resource Officers and may not possess independent law enforcement or arrest authority.

Student discipline remains the responsibility of building administration. Security/safety personnel support building safety and may assist administrators, but routine school discipline decisions are handled by school administration.

All applicants must:

• Be at least 21 years of age.
• Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Successfully pass all required background checks.
• Demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism, reliability, and the ability to work with students and staff.
• Possess strong communication and de-escalation skills.
• Be able to follow District policies, building procedures, safety protocols, and administrative direction.
• Be available for assigned work hours and, when required, evening/weekend events.
• Be physically able to perform assigned safety/security duties, including standing, walking, responding to incidents, and monitoring assigned areas.
• Provide requested credential documentation, if applicable.

Depending on the role sought, preferred or required qualifications may include:

• Current affiliation with a law enforcement agency.
• Current or prior service with the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office, Youngstown Police Department, another municipal police department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, or another recognized law enforcement agency.
• OPOTA/basic peace officer training completion.
• Current OPOTC status or prior peace officer service.
• Retired law enforcement status.
• LEOSA/HR 218 qualification, if applicable.
• Current firearm qualification, if applicable.
• 40-hour School Resource Officer training through OSROA, NASRO, OPOTA, or another approved provider.
• Prior school security, law enforcement, military, corrections, safety, youth supervision, or crisis response experience.
• Experience working with children, adolescents, families, and school personnel.
• Ability to work in a diverse school environment with professionalism, consistency, and respect.

Applicants may be asked to provide copies of applicable credentials, including but not limited to:

• Law enforcement ID/card;
• OPOTA/basic peace officer training certificate;
• OPOTC status or appointment documentation;
• SRO training certificate;
• LEOSA/HR 218 qualification;
• Firearm qualification documentation;
• Retirement/separation documentation;
• Agency approval for secondary employment or school assignment;
• Other relevant training, certification, or security-related credentials.

The hourly rate for these positions will range from $25.00 to $35.00 per hour, depending on qualifications, verified credentials, role classification, assignment, and applicable labor agreements.
