Nursing Graduate - Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) - D/N - August Cohort - LHAAMC

Overview The nursing graduate shall practice only under the direct supervision of a registered nurse who is physically present on the unit to cosign medication transcription, medication administration, and nursing documentation, and continually observe, assist, coordinate, evaluate, and monitor. The nursing graduate shall use the initials NG after the nursing graduate's name as credentials. Responsibilities Transcribe medication orders per written policies and procedures once skill validation has been successfully completed. Administer medications and controlled substances, and sign controlled substances sheets. Document in the medical record with the abbreviation NG. Perform patient assessments after the initial assessment or after the first assessment of the shift performed by the registered nurse. Perform and document routine procedures taught within the nursing graduate's generic nursing program, including placing nasal gastric tubes, performing urinary catheterizations, applying sterile dressings, performing blood sugar checks, and obtaining specimens. Practice only under the direct supervision of a RN who is physically present on the unit. May not refer to oneself or practice as an RN or LPN, or be considered a staff person for staffing patterns, accept charge responsibilities, perform initial patient assessment, develop patient plans of care, evaluate or document patient discharge, or independently administer medications or intravenous therapy. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited registered nursing program. Eligible to sit for the NCLEX exam. Must pass the NCLEX within 120 days of application to the Board of Nursing; practice as a nursing graduate must cease immediately if the graduate fails two attempts at the NCLEX exam or has not successfully passed within 120 days.
