Sign Language Interpreter

Position Overview Position is 81.3% FTE (approximately 32.5 hours per week), 10-month term. Under general supervision, provide sign language interpreting services to facilitate communication among students, staff, parents, teachers, and others in a variety of settings. Independently interpret complex subject matter and educational concepts; perform related duties as assigned. Key Responsibilities Provide sign language interpreting services to deaf and hard‑of‑hearing individuals, facilitating communication between students, staff, parents, and teachers. Serve as an interpreter in classrooms, assemblies, theatrical performances, sporting events, meetings, conferences, after‑school programs, field trips, special events, vocational trainings, workshops, and emergency situations. Interpret during classroom activities, lectures, discussions, non‑captioned visuals, story readings, plays, and public address announcements; use an appropriate register for each setting. Offer expressive and receptive interpretation and transliteration in American Sign Language, manually coded signed English systems, and voicing into English. Communicate with students using the mode best suited to their needs per Individualized Education Plans (IEP); participate in IEP meetings; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Review textbooks and academic materials in preparation for interpreting; collaborate with teachers on environmental changes and instructional modifications. Reinforce instructional concepts and ensure student understanding of classroom instruction; interpret student questions and comments. Encourage and guide self‑reliance, assist with use of auditory equipment, and observe student behavior and progress. Assist in monitoring classroom, outdoor, playground, field‑trip, and other activities to ensure student safety. Interpret for district staff and others at meetings, trainings, and events requiring interpretation. Attend and participate in meetings, conferences, workshops, and in‑service trainings to maintain current knowledge. Knowledge & Abilities Expressive and receptive interpretation and transliteration in ASL, manually coded signed English, and voicing into English. Understanding of concerns of deaf and hard‑of‑hearing individuals. Basic concepts of child development, age‑appropriate behaviors, and classroom management techniques. Familiarity with equipment used by deaf and hard‑of‑hearing individuals. Knowledge of subjects taught in schools (arts, literature, mathematics, history, science). Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Correct oral and written usage of English. Qualifications Education and Training High‑school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following: Completion of at least two years of college (48 semester units or 60 quarter units). Associate of Arts degree or higher. Passing score on an examination administered by the Personnel Commission demonstrating knowledge and ability to assist in reading, writing, and mathematics instruction. Completion of coursework in Deaf Studies, Early Child Education, or a related field is preferred. Experience and Certification Valid certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or an equivalent with a score of level 4.0 or higher (NAD, ACCI, EIPA, ESSE). Experience interpreting in a variety of settings, including schools, assemblies, theatrical performances, sporting events, meetings, conferences, and emergency situations. Knowledge of classroom management and instructional strategies for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students. Other Requirements Must submit official transcripts or degree documentation to the Personnel Commission Office. Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license; personal automobile may be required. Work independently with little direction; meet schedules and timelines. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information. Work collaboratively as an educational team member.
