The role
This is a hands-on role on the Accounting and Finance team, owning US payroll end to end and supporting the wider team through month-end close. You'll run semi-monthly payroll in ADP and Workday, coordinate with international payroll vendors, and keep payroll-related GL accounts clean and audit-ready. You'll work closely with HR, Benefits, FP&A, and Accounting.

What you'll do

• Own semi-monthly US payroll for salaried and hourly employees, in compliance with federal, state, and local rules
• Pull and reconcile payroll input from Workday each cycle and keep the payroll master file current
• Enter changes in ADP, review previews, and resolve discrepancies across earnings, deductions, taxes, benefits, and garnishments before submission
• Prepare standard control reports each cycle, including payroll recap, register, statistical summary, change reports, and benefits deduction reports
• Route payroll packages for approval by the Controller, Assistant Controller, and CFO as needed, and submit on time
• Process off-cycle payments with proper documentation, approvals, and GL treatment
• Act as the main point of contact for employee payroll questions
• Coordinate non-US payroll with HR and local vendors so company standards are applied consistently
• Review vendor-prepared pay slips, reports, and journals for accuracy and local compliance
• Track cut-offs, approvals, and payment instructions with external providers
• Maintain an organized repository of global payroll reports, approvals, and journals for audit and close
• Prepare and post payroll journal entries in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central with accurate GL and cost-center coding
• Reconcile payroll-related balance sheet accounts monthly, including payroll clearing, accrued payroll, accrued bonus and commission, and benefits and tax liabilities
• Prepare month-end schedules and variance analysis that tie payroll, benefits, and accruals to the GL by entity, department, and cost center
• Stay current on US payroll and wage-and-hour rules, with particular emphasis on California
• Keep processing within internal controls, with documented approvals and audit trails
• Prepare documentation for financial statement, SOC, workers' comp, benefit carrier, and retirement plan audits
• Support quarter-end and year-end work, including W-2 reporting and tax reconciliations
• Act as a power user of Workday, ADP, and Business Central, and help test configuration changes and integrations
• Build Excel reconciliations and control reports, and look for ways to automate manual checks
• Document payroll SOPs and help train backup coverage

What you'll bring

• 4 to 7+ years of hands-on payroll experience, including ownership of multi-state, semi-monthly US payroll, ideally in a high-growth or technology environment
• Experience supporting GL work, including journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations
• Strong knowledge of US payroll regulations, wage-and-hour rules, tax withholding, and benefits deductions (medical, dental, vision, HSA and FSA, 401(k))
• Experience with a major payroll platform such as ADP Workforce Now and an HCM system such as Workday
• Strong Excel skills and comfort with large, detailed data sets
• Clear communicator who can explain payroll calculations and GL impact to non-finance colleagues
• Able to manage deadlines across entities and time zones

Nice to have

• Associate or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
• Experience working with international payroll providers
• Experience supporting payroll-related audits
• AR experience (invoicing, collections, aging reports) or AP experience (invoice coding, payment runs, aging analysis)
• CPP or similar payroll certification
