Detailed Position Information
The Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Marine Biogeochemistry and Paleoceanography. We seek a field- and laboratory-based geoscientist whose research examines the cycling of climate-relevant elements in marine systems and connects modern-ocean processes with environmental and ecological signals preserved in sediments and the fossil record. Relevant areas include chemical oceanography, stable-isotope and trace-element geochemistry, marine nitrogen and carbon cycling, paleoproxy development, biomineralization, micropaleontology, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology, and high-resolution microanalysis. Candidates using stable isotope and/or trace-element geochemistry to investigate marine carbon, nitrogen, nutrient, or related biogeochemical cycles are especially encouraged to apply. Preferred Qualifications
• A record of scholarship in marine biogeochemistry, chemical oceanography, and/or stable-isotope or trace-element geochemistry. • Research integrating stable-isotope geochemistry with microfossil, biomineral, sedimentary, or other marine archives to connect modern-ocean processes with paleoenvironmental or paleoceanographic reconstructions. • Experience with marine fieldwork and laboratory analysis of seawater, organic matter, sediments, biominerals, or microfossils. • Experience with high-resolution analytical methods and the potential to contribute to shared instrumentation facilities and interdisciplinary research collaborations. • At least two years of postdoctoral research experience by the appointment date. • Teaching and mentoring experience relevant to departmental needs.
