Summary of Primary Function / General Purpose of Position The Step‑down Registered Nurse (RN) delivers patient care using the nursing process through data collection and assessment, identifies and determines the priority of patient problems/needs, and evaluates the process and outcome of nursing care, all in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team. The RN coordinates, provides, and directs patient teaching activities and coordinates the care provided by health team members. Essential Job Functions Conducts initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyzes assessment data, creates a plan of care, implements treatment, and evaluates treatment effectiveness. Administers medications safely in accordance with the State of Practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies and procedures. Actes as the point of contact for patients’ care coordination throughout hospital departments. Participates in ongoing quality improvement and patient safety initiatives in the department. Serves as a patient advocate in collaboration with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics. Supports care coordination with family members or caregivers. Clinically manages patients with multi‑system organ failure and/or multisystem trauma. Uses the AACN Synergy Model to restore, support, promote, rehabilitate, or palliate to maintain the physiologic, psychologic, and psychosocial stability of patients across the lifespan. Synthesizes and prioritizes information to take immediate, evidence‑based, patient‑focused action using clinical judgement and clinical inquiry. Anticipates and responds with confidence and adapts to rapidly changing patient conditions. Responds to the unique needs of patients and families coping with unanticipated illness or injury, and advocates for their choices in quality of life. Practises care in accordance with the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model. Additional duties as may be required by the supervisor and subject to reasonable accommodation. Licensing / Certification Current RN license in the state of employment or covered by a compact (required). BLS – Basic Life Support (required). ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (preferred at hire; required within 6 months of hire). CCRN – Critical Care Registered Nurse (preferred). PCCN – Progressive Care Certified Nurse (preferred). National Institute of Health Stroke Certification (preferred). Education Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred). Work Experience 1 year of RN experience (required; new graduates and RNs with less than 1 year may be considered). 6 months of RN experience in an acute care hospital setting (preferred). Training EPIC Electronic Health Record training (preferred). Critical Care Course (preferred). Skills Assigns patient care according to the nursing skill, knowledge, and scope of practice of staff. Orients, facilitates learning experiences, and provides education to nursing staff and others based on quality improvement indicators and outcomes. Possesses comprehensive clinical knowledge, skills, and competency to deliver evidence‑based patient care in accordance with current standards of practice, policy and procedure, and BSMH mission. Performs comprehensive assessment of patients’ clinical condition and psychosocial needs. Develops, implements, and prioritizes plans of care safely and efficiently. Applies the nursing process in patient care delivery. Assesses patients’ physical and emotional responses to treatment and revises plan of care accordingly. Assists patients and families in coping with illness. Collaborates with others to deliver coordinated patient care. Communicates effectively verbally and in writing. Applies principles of cultural diversity and inclusion when caring for patients. Recognizes limits and seeks assistance; acquires information to care safely. Grows professionally through education, literature, in‑services, and workshops. Shows professionalism and accountability for own actions. Integrates cost‑effective practices and models stewardship of resources. Practices self‑care and resilience in conflict and difficult circumstances. Protects the safety and privacy of all persons. Uses office and clinical technologies effectively. Communicates with patients in understandable terms relative to their preferences. Provides compassionate, relationship‑based care to help patients find meaning. Maintains calm, adaptive, and collective demeanor in emergencies. Manages chest tubes, hemodynamic monitoring, transvenous pacing, conscious sedation, and advanced respiratory modalities. Working Conditions The role may involve high stress, fluctuating workloads, physical altercations, verbal abuse, use of restraints, high noise levels, bright lights, limited hazardous substances, exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials, and constant interruptions.
