Environmental Chemical Lab Scientist – Agency 292 DEPT. OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY Job is full‑time, located in the State Environmental Laboratory Services Division – General Chemistry Section in Oklahoma City. Position requires in‑office work Monday through Friday and a clean background check. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States; the agency does not sponsor H1B visas. Basic Purpose Analyze water and other environmental samples to determine compliance with state and federal regulations using approved methods. Develop analytical methods and support special studies. Maintain laboratory equipment, inventory, and records. Prepare reports and may participate in consultation and expert‑witness activities. Typical Functions Perform analytical testing on public and private water, hazardous waste, soils, biological tissues, and other environmental samples following SOPs and work instruction documents. Prioritize and schedule daily work to meet Section, Group, Division, and Agency goals. Use the Laboratory Information Management System and related databases; thoroughly document actions and decisions that generate analytical data. Provide technical assistance to customers and develop knowledge of regulatory requirements concerning sample validity and response actions. Review records and data generated by self and peers. Adhere to divisional policies, including the SELSD Quality Assurance Manual, Ethics and Data Integrity Program, and Laboratory Safety Program. Assist with the review and development of technical and operational SOPs and work instruction documents. Manage inventory control of supplies and consumables required for testing. Maintain general housekeeping, sample control, and disposal procedures. Education and Experience LevelI: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biological, or environmental science. LevelII: Same as LevelI plus one year of professional laboratory experience, or a master’s degree in chemistry, biology, or environmental science. Applicants must be within 60 days of obtaining their degree. Travel Requirements Some occasional travel may be required for training and career enhancement activities. Additional Considerations/Preferences Preference may be given to candidates with experience in analytical technologies such as FIA, UV‑VIS spectroscopy, titration, and IC. Physical Requirements Stand for several hours and perform repetitive tasks. Maintain visual acuity for routine laboratory tasks. Wear PPE, including lab coats, goggles, and eye protection. Lift up to 25lb. independently. Special Requirements Intermediate computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel. Experience with LIMS and other laboratory databases for data storage, tracking, and quality control assessment. Flexibility with daily assignments, ability to handle stress, and adapt to changing priorities. Occasional work on weekends, holidays, during extreme weather events, and outside normal business hours may be required.
