TheDevEx Platformsteam (6 engineers) focuses on developer experience and workflow automation.We’re now expanding into moreAI-assisted developer workflowsusing tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot to support debugging, migrations, test generation, and everyday development in a safe, measurable way.This role sits in Developer Platforms and reports to theEngineering Manager of the DevEx Platforms team.About the RoleAs aSenior Software Engineeron DevEx Platforms, you’ll buildGenAI-augmented developer experiencesand platform capabilities used across all of The New York Times.Your work will help teams ship faster and more safely, pay down technical debt through structured migrations and platform modernization, and turn effective internal practices into reusable tools and agents.What You’ll DoDesign and build GenAI-powered developer tooling: prompts, IDE integrations, Cursor/Claude rules, and telemetry to understand how they’re used.Build and run the GenAI developer platform: Tools, services, and integrations leveragingLiteLLMto power both local and background/long-running agents, providing auth, configuration, and LLM routing.Own guardrails and observability for agentic workflows: integrate withDatadog,DX, andFinOut, define sensible standards, and make sure agents interact with Jira, GitHub, and internal platforms in a safe, auditable way.Work closely with engineers and managersacross Product Engineering to understand how they build software today and to design solutions that actually fit the way they work.Support our mission and values, includingjournalistic independence, and keep ethics and safety central to how we use AI in developer workflows.This role includeslimited on-call responsibilities; the schedule will be set when you join.Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independenceand a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.You will report to the Engineering Manager of the DevEx Platforms teamBasic Qualifications:5+ years of professional software engineering experience2+ years of experience improving developer experience through workflows, documentation, and capabilities of the internal platformExperience designing and building cloud native applications. We use GolangHands-on experience building software using GenAI tools, like GitHub's Copilot, Cursor or Claude CodePreferred Qualifications:3+ years of hands on experience managing and deploying resources in AWS2+ years of experience managing workloads deployed on KubernetesExperience in prompt engineering or building AI-powered toolsThis role requires limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.#LI-HybridREQ- Compensation and Benefits For This Role:In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
