Job Summary: The Registered Nurse is a professional practitioner who assesses, manages, directs, and provides nursing care activities during the patient’s hospital stay and coordinates planning with other disciplines utilizing a patient/customer driven approach. Job Responsibilities and Requirements POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Essential Functions Performs comprehensive nursing assessment/reassessment. Establishes, coordinates and evaluates a plan of care based on analysis of assessment data, patient diagnosis, lab data, tests, procedures, physician orders, protocols and standards of care and other information as relevant. Provides and documents nursing interventions based on assessed patient needs, plan of care, and changes in patient status. Documents and/or communicates nursing care and changes in patient condition. Specialized Care: Provides specialized care to patients at high risk for injury (including restraint care, pain management, abuse assessment). Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice. Participates in learning experiences that increases professional competence. Participates in staff meetings, committees, shared governance, and team activities. Demonstrates ability to adapt to changes in work demands. Practices safety and infection control in accordance with policies and procedures. Specialized Care Details Restraint Care Initiates/evaluates alternatives to restraint prior to application Applies restraints consistent with the approved procedure. Monitors response throughout the restraint period. Provides specified patient care (toileting, skin care, hydration, feeding, etc.) on a timely basis. Provides consultation for peers to determine alternatives to restraints and 1:1 observation. Documents restraint use and associated care thoroughly. Pain Management Assesses patient for presence of pain on admission and during assessments. Incorporates patient’s cultural/spiritual beliefs regarding pain into pain management plan. Implants pain management techniques focused on prevention. Includes patient and/or family members in developing a pain management plan. Considers other methods of pain control such as massage, repositioning, immobilization, and music therapy. Abuse Assessment Is aware of abuse recognition criteria and incorporates it into assessments. Reports signs of possible abuse/neglect to the appropriate authorities. Takes appropriate action to support patient safety when signs of abuse are noted. Professional Practice Expectations Adheres to quality and performance standards, policies, procedures, and protocols when implementing clinical care. Participates in continuous learning and maintains currency in all hospital/unit information and policies. Attends staff meetings, participates in committees, shared governance, and unit-based practice councils. Responds positively to changes and supports peers. Communicates patient care plans precisely and professionally. Supervises and teaches students/new staff nurses as required. Safety & Infection Control Practices standard precautions and disposes of hazardous waste per guidelines. Maintains safe, clean, comfortable environment for patients, families, and staff. Follows hand hygiene procedures and uses safe patient handling techniques. Adheres to dress code and keeps environment clutter-free. Reports risk management concerns using eSRM. Completes all mandatory annual requirements (license, certifications, TB screening, influenza vaccination, ethics training, safety training, information security, abuse & neglect, bloodborne pathogens, competency, orientation, etc.). Service Excellence Provides prompt, respectful, courteous service. Ensures physical, spiritual, psychological, and emotional needs of patients and families are met. Communicates effectively, maintains confidentiality, and provides accurate handoff reports. Uses resources wisely and recommends practice changes to increase efficiency. Performance Improvement Assists in developing and implementing nursing unit goals. Remains current with evidence-based practices. Identifies opportunities for improvement, participates in data collection, and leads improvement teams when requested. Participates in nursing research and hospital performance improvement activities.
