Mechanical TechnicianThe SARA, Inc. High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) is looking for a talented, motivated, and imaginative Mechanical Technician to support research and development activities and transition innovative technologies to the DoD, DoE, and their contractors in Colorado Springs, CO. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-standing programs and new programs supporting our customers. Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from conception all the way through to operation.The Mechanical Technician plays a critical role in the rapid development, fabrication, and testing of mechanical and electromechanical systems. This is a highly hands-on position involving welding, carpentry, machining, and mechanical assembly to support prototype builds and system integration efforts. The role requires strong ownership, a sense of urgency, and the ability to execute efficiently in a dynamic R&D environment where priorities shift and timelines are tight. The ideal candidate is proactive, resourceful, and driven to see tasks through to completion with a high level of quality and accountability.Core Responsibilities:Build, fabricate, and integrate mechanical and electromechanical systems and prototypes using a variety of methods including welding, machining, carpentry, and mechanical assemblyPerform testing, troubleshooting, and modification of systems using standard diagnostic and measurement toolsInterpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications to support fabrication, assembly, and issue resolutionAssist engineers in preparing, executing, and documenting mechanical, environmental, and functional testsDocument build processes, procedures, configurations, and test results to support prototype and production effortsSupport installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of systems in both laboratory and field environmentsTake ownership of assigned tasks and deliverables, proactively driving work to completion with a strong sense of urgency in support of project schedulesCollaborate with engineers, technicians, and external vendors to meet technical objectives and deadlinesPrepare materials and components for fabrication processes, including surface coatings and finishesAssist with inventory organization, material handling, and assembly of build kitsAssist with running environmental test equipment, and recording data as directed by the test engineerFollow work instructions and quality procedures with accurate record keeping and attention to detailMaintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace in lab, shop, and field environmentsPerform other duties, assignments, and responsibilities as reasonably assigned by management in support of departmental, programmatic, and organizational objectivesRequirements:High school diploma or equivalent2 – 4 years of hands-on experience in mechanical or electromechanical assembly, fabrication, and testing in a lab or field environmentExperience with fabrication methods including machining (mills, lathes), welding, carpentry, and mechanical assemblyStrong troubleshooting skills across mechanical systems with basic electrical/electronic understandingAbility to work independently as well as collaboratively within a teamStrong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectivelyProficiency with Microsoft Office applicationsWillingness and ability to operate shop and field equipment (e.g., forklifts, scissor lifts)Valid driver's license and ability to travel up to 25% (including trips up to three weeks)U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearanceMay require moderate physical effort, including standing, sitting, and use of hands while performing duties, and carrying or lifting up to 50 poundsWorking environment is indoor, moderately loud, reasonably clean, well-lit, and well-ventilated; moderate physical hazards may existPreferred Qualifications:5 – 7 years of hands-on experience in mechanical or electromechanical assembly, fabrication, and testing in a lab or field environmentActive DoD Top Secret clearanceCertifications in machining, welding, electrical work, soldering, or equipment operationExperience with commercial electrical installations, specifications, and applicable codesFamiliarity with basic electronic circuits and troubleshooting techniquesExperience working in R&D, prototyping, or low-rate production environmentsKnowledge of material properties, fabrication processes, and material compatibilityFamiliarity with safety practices related to high voltage and high-power systemsExperience supporting field installations, system integration, or customer site activitiesExperience with inventory control systems or ERP/MRP toolsCommercial Driver's License (CDL)SARA offers a competitive benefits package to include:Medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance; and other supplemental programsA generous PTO program (vacation, sick, holiday)Tuition & certification reimbursementFlexible work schedulesDiscretionary Employee bonuses401(k) match/profit sharingEmployee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)Pay RangeSalary at SARA is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual's particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $23 to $32 (hourly USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of SARA's total compensation package for employees.
