Job Title: SCHOOL LIBRARIAN Reports To: School Principal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB SUMMARY To support students and teachers in achieving the high national and state standards represented in local curriculums as well as Vermont's State Board Adopted Standards; to transform the school library into a full-service 21st century learning center that incorporates both print and digital resources, including, but not limited to, educational research databases, print books, audiobooks, and eBooks. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Manage the day-to-day operation of the school library: Initiate, develop, maintain and implement rules and practices related to the operation of the school library, including selection, reconsideration, circulation, and management of resources that are consistent with or support school and district policies, philosophy, and objectives. Create an orderly, attractive, and welcoming environment which provides effective learning spaces for individual and group needs. Organize and display materials and technology tools for maxim accessibility, and to provide equitable access to information literacy and technology resources for all users. Select, manage and maintain automated circulation and comprehensive catalog system for all library materials to provide appropriate services for efficient and effective access to essential information/materials/technology tools. Instruct teachers and students on the use of the systems. Create and efficiently manage the budget for the acquisition of library services, resources and supplies. Research, develop, acquire, organize, maintain and make available a balanced and diverse collection of current information resources for teachers and students for an enhanced and engaging learning environment which are aligned with the AASL Standards Framework for Learners. Evaluate the connection between information literacy needs and information technology resources regularly to determine additional resources needs as well as removing inappropriate and outdated materials. Evaluate, select, use, and teach students and other staff to use current and emerging school library information resources. Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, educational technology integration specialist and other learning specialists to design and implement standards-based instruction that supports progress in achieving Vermont's standards and local proficiency-based graduation requirements in all content areas: Educate classroom teachers about information literacy and resources that support classroom curriculums. Communicate and collaborate with classroom teachers to promote student acquisition of literacy and information technology skills and understanding through classroom curriculum connections. Partner and collaborate with classroom teachers to create units and lessons that integrate library resources into the classroom curriculum to enhance student learning and support the achievement of classroom objectives. Promote and create a learning environment in which students use information and communication technologies to engage in learning tasks that are meaningful, relevant, and authentic, in ways that engage student interest and foster independent and collaborative learning. Provide resources in ways that allow for varied access durning and beyond the traditional school day. Maintain a system for promoting library resources and programs. Provide leadership and promote the library information literacy and information technology resources to advance instructional goals and expand student educational experiences. Communicates services and promote the library as a valuable and integral resource in the school community. Meet with professional library and educational technology specialist colleagues to advance school, district, and professional goals. Provide program support and intervention for students and teachers as needed. Promote the ethical use of information in all formats; educate students on digital citizenship to ensure students understand the human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Help students to develop research skills using materials in both print and digital formats for planned assignments. Train and supervise other library staff and volunteers. OTHER PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Accurately and thoroughly assesses a library program's effectiveness and the extent to which it achieved its goals, and effectively modifies the program to enhance student learning. Communicates/collaborates effectively with parents to keep families informed of library programs and resources, and effectively responds to parent concerns and engages families to help meet the educational needs of the student. Works effectively, cooperatively and respectfully with supervisors, colleagues, subordinates, and other professionals and outside agencies. Participates in school-based teams, such as Data Teams, Leadership, MTSS, and Universal teams. Actively participates in school events, workshops, in-service meetings, teacher trainings, building level staff meetings, district meetings, and other school and district committees/projects. Seeks out and actively participates in opportunities for professional development to enhance skills, to support district goals and school action/strategic plans. Keeps abreast of current best practices, research findings, and other developments in the field. Actively participates in assisting and supporting other educators and administrators in the school and/or district. Shows professionalism and considers "What's best for students" in serving and advocating for students, and in decision making. Follows and assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and procedures, and policies of the CVSU. Assists in training, planning, and directing the activities of assigned paraeducators; plays an advisory role in evaluations of assigned paraeducators. Participate in the implementation of the school safety and crisis response plans including training and drill practice. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, in addition to the following: Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and working knowledge of Vermont's state standards required. Recent experience working in a Vermont school district is preferred. Certifications and Licenses: Holds or is eligible to hold a valid Vermont teaching license with a School Librarian endorsement (3-61) required. Additional licensing endorsement as an Educational Technology Specialist, or strong background in educational technology integration preferred. Meets all the basic competencies and qualifications of the endorsement(s) as listed in the Regulations Governing the Licensing of Educators and the Preparation of Educational Professionals. Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common educational and technical journals, periodicals and procedures, and regulations. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents, regulatory agencies, or members of the community. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals that conform to school/district standards or regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, parents, peers, board members and the general public. Mathematical/Reasoning Skills: Ability to interpret and use test results by applying math concepts such as standard error of measurement, bands of confidence, standard scores, and percentiles. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Computer Skills and Experience: Ability to learn and utilize library management system, productivity software (email, calendar, word processing, spreadsheets), grading, student information, and assessment systems, and new software programs as systems upgrade. Media and Technology Skills and Experiences: Demonstrated knowledge of library organization and systems, and use of computerized library information systems required. Strong background in information technology and educational technology integration is also preferred. Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Ability to effectively, efficiently and regularly communicate and work cooperatively with a variety of individuals, including students, peers, subordinates, supervisors, parents, and representatives of outside organizations. Ability to effectively resolve conflicts and handle stress. Ability to successfully support diverse students, including students of color, English Language Learners, and LGBTQIA+ students. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above, in addition to the following: under most circumstances, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb steps; stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift, carry, move objects. Employees are regularly required to handle stressful situations and resolve conflicts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. WORKING CONDITIONS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
