The Art and Humanities Department at Glendale Community College invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, residential faculty position in Art Foundations. The successful candidate will teach core studio foundation courses that support the Associate in Arts, Fine Arts (AAFA) degree, including Drawing I (ART 111), Two-Dimensional Design (ART 112), Color (ART 113), and Three-Dimensional Design (ART 115). The position emphasizes teaching and mentoring students in fundamental visual principles, creative problem-solving, and material exploration that prepare them for advanced study across studio disciplines. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience with both traditional and contemporary 3D practices, such as wood, metal, clay, assemblage, installation, textile-based and soft sculptural practices, digital fabrication, and/or mixed media, and will be able to integrate emerging technologies and fabrication methods available through the college’s new STEAM Center and Makerspace. They will also play a key role in shaping the AAFA gateway curriculum by designing innovative, inclusive learning experiences that bridge art, technology, and interdisciplinary inquiry. Essential Functions Incorporating multiple methods of instruction and high impact learning strategies in a studio classroom setting, teaches a minimum of 30 load hours per academic year and maintains regular office hours each week to assist and mentor students. Provides instruction in foundation-level studio courses, including, but not limited to, Drawing I, Two-Dimensional Design, Color Theory, and Three-Dimensional Design. Collaborates with departmental faculty on program and course level assessment to promote student learning and to refine and update foundation curricula that align with course, program, and institutional learning outcomes. Supports and participates in departmental and student-focused co-curricular initiatives such as the Traveler literary and arts magazine, the annual Student Art Show, and other community-engaged learning opportunities. Engages in ongoing professional development to remain current with trends in art, design, and teaching and learning. Works collaboratively with faculty, department staff, tutors, and other student support services to promote student retention, academic success, and equitable learning experiences. Performs other related duties consistent with the role of residential faculty, including participation in accreditation activities, program review, and campus events. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field. Master’s degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credit hours in the following fields: Art, Ceramics, Conceptual Art, Drawing, Design, Digital Media, Fiber, Glass, Installation, Jewelry, Life Drawing, Metals, Painting, Performance, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Textiles, Video, Wood, Watercolor. Desired Qualifications Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in a 3D-focused studio discipline. Two years of cumulative college-level teaching experience in studio art, which may include equivalent adjunct, part-time, or full-time instruction (must include list of courses and semester taught). Evidence of an active studio or exhibition record demonstrating experience as a practicing artist (must include a PDF portfolio of creative work to be submitted with application materials to be considered). Documented evidence of inclusive teaching practices and/or support for all student populations in art and design education, demonstrated through teaching records, professional development, teaching materials, mentorship, or institutional service. Demonstrated experience using educational technologies to facilitate instruction (e.g., Canvas LMS, digital critique tools, or virtual learning environments) and/or applying emerging technologies in creative practice (e.g., digital fabrication, 3D modeling, 3D printing, etc). Special Working Conditions May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen. May be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. Work occurs in studio and laboratory settings where exposure to art materials and chemicals, equipment, and processes is routine. MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas. Travel to campus during the interview/selection process will be at the candidate's own expense. Additional Requirements Portfolio Instructions: Applicants must submit an artist statement describing their creative practice, research interests, and how these inform their teaching in Art Foundations. Applicants must also provide a digital portfolio that includes: 10+ images of personal creative work, with titles, media, dimensions, and year.
