Job Details Job Location: Potomac, MD 20854 Position Type: Full Time Education Level: 4 Year Degree Job Category: Athletics Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Director of Track & Field who will also serve as the Varsity Head Coach. This individual is responsible for leading and advancing a nationally recognized program across all levels (grades K–12). This is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to shape a storied high school track & field program with innovative and principled leadership. The role emphasizes elite athlete development, competitive success, and the intentional building of a strong, values-driven team culture—creating an environment of accountability, trust, and connection where student-athletes can thrive both on and off the field. Responsibilities include program-wide coaching and development strategy, meet strategy and analysis, college recruiting support, club program partnerships, staff management, and ensuring compliance with IAC and ISL league standards. This is a full-time position that combines the Director of Track & Field and Varsity Head Coach role with additional responsibilities at the School. The complementary role will be determined based on the successful candidate’s experience, expertise, and the School’s needs. Duties & Qualifications Lead the Bullis indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field programs across all seasons, developing a unified vision and values-driven culture across varsity, JV, and middle school levels Design and implement all aspects of the programs for grades 6–12, including season planning, training, meet preparation, event strategy, performance analysis, and student-athlete development Develop and implement a cohesive, age-appropriate training and development curriculum across all program levels and event groups to promote consistency, growth, and long-term success Build and oversee a comprehensive development program that creates a pipeline of skilled, committed student-athletes from the earliest grades through varsity competition Select, hire, supervise, and develop coaching staff across cross-country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field, ensuring appropriate expertise across event groups Foster a team culture grounded in accountability, trust, connection, sportsmanship, and high expectations Establish and maintain relationships with DMV-area running and track clubs and other organizations that support the development of the Bullis program Serve as the primary college recruiting resource for student-athletes and their families, helping each student-athlete identify and pursue best-fit opportunities Coordinate with student-athletes, families, and school personnel regarding weekly schedules, meet logistics, early dismissals, travel, and academic responsibilities Conduct all required coaching and program meetings before, during, and after each season Oversee program equipment, uniforms, meet entries, transportation needs, and facility usage to ensure organization, safety, cleanliness, and readiness Ensure that training, competition, and program operations comply with Bullis policies and all applicable IAC, ISL, and governing‑body standards Identify, plan, and oversee domestic travel to meets and national competitions that advance the program’s competitive and developmental goals, coordinating itineraries, transportation, lodging, supervision, communication, and student-athlete safety in partnership with the Athletics Office and other school departments Maintain consistent communication with the Director of Athletics, providing regular updates, feedback, and recommendations for program improvement across all three seasons Qualities A “franchise coach” mindset - someone who views this as a long-term investment in building a legacy program at Bullis The ability to motivate and develop student-athletes at all stages, from emerging runners and athletes to nationally competitive performers A demonstrated ability to build and sustain a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture across cross-country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field A development-minded coach who earns respect through their actions and creates a healthy, supportive, and appropriately competitive environment The leadership presence, confidence, and judgment to guide and represent a program that competes at the highest levels of scholastic track and field, regionally and nationally, while supporting student-athletes across all levels of experience and competition An appreciation for the distinct demands of different event groups and an ability to unite athletes and coaches around a shared program identity A commitment to sportsmanship, teamwork, accountability, and the holistic development of student-athletes The organizational skill, flexibility, and attention to detail required to lead a complex, three-season program with significant domestic travel A deep passion for cross-country and track and field, along with a genuine desire to honor the sports, the student-athletes, and the school Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree Deep knowledge of cross-country and track and field, including training principles, athlete development, event strategy, performance analysis, and meet preparation Significant coaching experience at the collegiate level or within a nationally competitive high school program Demonstrated success developing student-athletes across a range of experience and ability levels, including elite and nationally competitive athletes Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and program-management skills Demonstrated ability to recruit, supervise, and develop a coaching staff with expertise across track and field event groups Established relationships—or the demonstrated ability to build them—within the DMV and broader national cross-country and track and field communities Experience supporting student-athletes and families through the college recruiting process Experience planning and managing team travel for regional and national competitions CPR, First Aid, and concussion-training certification, or willingness to obtain required certifications Compensation and benefits are competitive, with an anticipated salary range of $70,000 to $100,000.
