This role involves working closely with field and office employees and traveling across the 8 counties in the district. Create a culture of accident prevention and safety awareness. Administer the new employee driver orientation program and vehicle safety program. Serve as or assist the Substance Control Officer. Coordinate and schedule employee safety awards and the annual Safety Awards Banquet/Equipment Roadeo. Develop localized policies, procedures, guidelines, and rule interpretations. Coordinate safety meetings, including planning, conducting, scheduling, and providing literature and audio‑visual material. Investigate employee accidents, prepare reports, maintain records, identify injury types and causes, recommend preventative actions, and conduct follow‑up investigations. Plan, schedule, and administer training on safety issues (defensive driving, CPR, first‑aid, fleet safety, hazardous materials) and maintain training records. Plan, schedule, and monitor programs that promote employee safety and accident prevention. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional Duties – Safety Officer III Inspect equipment and work areas. Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Administration, or a related discipline. Relevant work experience may substitute for a degree on a year‑per‑year basis. Experience Safety Officer II: 1 year in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related areas (full‑time or prorated part‑time). Safety Officer III: 2 years in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related areas (full‑time or prorated part‑time). Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle. Competencies Knowledge of applicable safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes. Construction, maintenance and operation of transportation facilities. Developing, interpreting, and implementing policies, procedures, and technical information. Public relations and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders. Data collection, sorting, and compilation; ability to instruct others. Computer proficiency with applicable programs and systems. Collaboration and cooperation with others to accomplish organizational goals. Additional Competencies – Safety Officer III Researching, evaluating, and interpreting complex information, including policies and state/federal laws and regulations specific to the functional area. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Sedentary work: lift up to 10 lbs at a time; occasionally carry files/small tools. Light work: lift up to 20 lbs at a time; frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs. Standing for prolonged periods. Repetitive motion: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Medical and Drug Testing Requirements This job is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; subject to random drug testing.
