Primary Purpose:

Manages and coordinates the day-to-day operational, logistical, regulatory, and safety activities of the Teaching Gross Anatomy and Histology Laboratories, as well as operational support for research conducted within NSU MD Laboratories. Works closely with College Deans, departmental leadership, Director of Anatomy Education and Research, faculty, course directors, and staff to ensure the highest standard of quality education is achieved as per the curriculum. Manages laboratory facilities, records, specimens, anatomical models, equipment, and related resources and ensures that anatomical specimens are maintained in compliance with applicable institutional, local, state, and federal regulations.

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Works with upper management or their faculty designee to provide the operational and logistical support necessary for implementation of laboratory teaching activities including coordinating laboratory space and scheduling, ensuring availability of equipment and supplies, obtaining and organizing required resources, and facilitating access to laboratory resources.
2. Works with upper management or their faculty designee to facilitate the operational and logistical requirements of research projects, including documentation and recordkeeping of required compliance and safety training, laboratory access, specimen procurement, equipment and supplies, and adherence to applicable laboratory and institutional requirements.
3. Assists with the logistical and operational implementation of summer dissection and teaching assistant programs, including managing the hiring process, onboarding, scheduling, laboratory access, safety and compliance requirements, operational support, and management of timesheets. Selects teaching assistants and dissectors, as well as assignment of their duties and responsibilities, and will be conducted in collaboration with upper management.
4. Manages the day-to-day operations of the anatomy laboratory, including laboratory readiness, scheduling logistics, equipment and supply management, storage areas, inventory, and the general organization and functionality of the laboratory facility.
5. Supervises the physical set-up and preparation of equipment and materials needed for the labs; ensures proper clean-up and maintenance of all lab facilities.
6. Provides quality control and continuous improvement of anatomy laboratory operations and procedures, with emphasis on operational efficiency, safety, regulatory compliance, resource management, and effective laboratory workflows.
7. Interacts with outside institutional faculty/administrators involved with acquisition and handling of cadaver specimens; local funeral directors involved with cadaver transportation, embalming and cremation; donor families regarding receipt, status, and disposition of cadaver remains.
8. Formulates, proposes, and works within budget for ordering / purchasing supplies, equipment, and specimens for the Gross Anatomy, histology, simulation, as well as research laboratories and for any other personnel expenses (i.e., technician/administrative support), through collaboration with the Dean of Research and Department Chair.
9. Supervises laboratory technicians and manages the hiring process, oversight of daily activities and work assignments, conducts performance evaluations, motivates, trains, and performs other employee-related actions.
10. Conducts inspections, compliance reviews, and hazard assessments of anatomy and histology laboratories to ensure compliance with institutional requirements. Maintains laboratory safety standards; coordinates required safety training; monitors appropriate use of personal protective equipment; oversees chemical and biological safety procedures; and promptly identifies and communicates safety or compliance concerns to upper management, and appropriate institutional offices.
11. Implements and maintains sustainability and pollution prevention practices and a hazardous waste reduction program; manages the proper acquisition, labeling, storage and disposal of all hazardous materials, including cadavers while maintaining required records.
12. In conjunction with NSU Environmental Health and Safety Department (EHS), conducts EHS and risk hazard evaluations/audits, hazard assessments and develops corrective actions proposals; prepares reports and provides safety documentation to proper authorities; implements proposed corrective actions; maintains documentation with reference to training, safety SOPs, safety data sheets and records pertaining to safety.
13. Maintains and updates records of laboratory inspections. Monitors completion of required tasks such as inspections, lab permit/registration renewals, regulatory filings and takes action to complete in a timely manner.
14. Prepares and conducts Lab Safety training including biological, chemical, general, and physical protection in laboratories, hazardous materials shipping, and other customized trainings to administrators, faculty, researchers, staff, and students.
15. Prepares for and participates in the response and investigation and follow up of emergencies and laboratory-related accidents or exposures and ensures all incidents are property documented and reported to the proper authorities.
16. Acts as a liaison between students, faculty, administration, and staff regarding access to gross anatomy cadaver dissection lab and preparation areas and access to and usage of donor specimens. Directs students to needed supplies or provides needed support relating to cadaver handling.
17. Collaborates with the Willed Body Program interest group of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA) and the Anatomical Board for the state of Florida.
18. Manages anatomy lab spaces and resources by non-course users and student interest groups: Clinical demos (e.g., OBGYN, ORTHO, Suture clinic), Special projects (e.g., graduate student research projects or independent study projects), Outreach and student interest groups (e.g., AHEC, HAPS, SOSA, lab tours) and management of other anatomy-related activities for outside groups, in collaboration with Chair/Vice Chair of Medical Education and Director of Anatomy Education and Research.
19. Maintains regular and consistent communication with department faculty.
20. Interprets and maintains proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines and trends in laboratory safety.
21. Participates in special projects and as active member on NSU Safety Committees.
22. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Requirements: 

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 1. Knowledge of OSHA standards and regulations.
2. Must have excellent communication, professionalism, interpersonal, and collaborative skills and be able to effectively work with and support a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including departmental leadership, faculty, course directors, staff, teaching assistants, students, researchers, institutional administrative and regulatory units, external collaborators, vendors, and other relevant organizations and partners, in the effective delivery of anatomy education and research activities.
3. Knowledge of gross anatomy and histology laboratory processes, equipment and facilities.
4. Thorough knowledge of laboratory chemicals and chemical hygiene practices.
5. Ability to monitor and maintain donors and anatomical specimens in optimal condition.
6. Ability to work effectively with faculty and students in planning and coordinating labs.
7. Must take initiative, be organized, be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadline requirements.
8. Work independently and as part of a team.
9. Strong interpersonal and excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail.
10. Must have collaborative customer service attitude and skills.
11. Administrative experience in record keeping in medical related fields.
12. Computer competency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly in the maintenance of databases and spreadsheets.
13. Sound, critical judgment.
14. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
15. Knowledge of financial, enrollment and learning.

Required Certifications/Licensures:

Required Education:  Bachelor's Degree

Major (if required: 

Required Experience: 1. Two (2) years of experience in laboratory safety.
2. One (1) year in a supervisor role.
3. Experience in compliance with OSHA regulations and bio-safety management.
4. Previous experience in biological science and academic cadaver dissection in a medically related program.
5. Knowledge of Anatomical Board Regulations for safe and ethical handling of cadavers.

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. Master's Degree.
2. Ability to teach anatomy and dissect donors.
