Registered Nurse (RN)

NaphCare is hiring Registered Nurses (RNs) for the team in Bessemer, AL, to manage all aspects of healthcare for individuals incarcerated in the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility. As a Correctional Registered Nurse (RN), you will work alongside correctional officers and other medical professionals to provide care to patients in residence. Working within a controlled environment where security is top priority, you will perform physical assessments, administer medications, manage chronic illnesses, and respond to emergencies. This is a unique position where you can make a difference to a diverse patient population with complex medical needs. New grads are encouraged to apply — we’ll train you in correctional healthcare. Responsibilities Perform initial health screenings and physical assessments of newly detained individuals. Monitor and document patient health, including vital signs and medical histories. Provide direct patient care, triage, assess patient needs, develop care plans, and coordinate services. Manage acute and chronic conditions such as asthma, hypertension, and diabetes. Respond to medical emergencies, provide first aid, and ensure timely transport to appropriate healthcare facilities. Educate patients on preventive care, healthy lifestyle choices, and substance abuse prevention. Understand and adhere to correctional facility security protocols while working closely with officers and other healthcare professionals. Maintain accurate medical records, document treatment plans, and report relevant information. Qualifications Current, unrestricted RN license in Alabama. Active BLS CPR certification (AHA preferred). Knowledge of nursing practice principles, occupational health, infectious disease management, and applicable healthcare laws, regulations, and procedures for direct patient care. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Flexible schedule and willingness to work overtime when needed. Integrity, professionalism, and adherence to a Code of Conduct and all facility correctional healthcare policies and legal requirements. Ability to interact effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds, including those with mental health or substance abuse issues. Ability to maintain confidentiality of proprietary and confidential information. Must pass the facility’s criminal background check and drug screening. Physical Capabilities Must be able to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks like CPR while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift.
