Electrical Safety Professional Internship Program Department: Corporate Safety Reports to: Safety Director Program Term: Summer 2027 Duration: 10–12 weeks Intern Profile: Students in Safety Management or Occupational Health The Electrical Corporation of America, Inc. Safety Professional Internship Program provides hands‑on safety training, jobsite exposure, compliance knowledge, and leadership development to prepare interns for full‑time roles in electrical safety management. This program blends technical electrical knowledge , regulatory compliance , and practical field safety operations . Program Goals Safety Goals Build foundational knowledge in NFPA 70E , OSHA 1910/1926 , Lockout/Tagout, and arc flash hazards. Teach interns to identify, document, and correct unsafe conditions. Prepare interns to support jobsite audits, toolbox talks, and incident investigations. Professional Goals Introduce interns to the responsibilities of a Safety Professional in an electrical contracting environment. Build communication, leadership, and documentation skills. Provide exposure to project management and construction safety planning. Program Structure: Week by Week Week 1 — Orientation & Safety Fundamentals Company overview: mission, organization chart, safety culture HR onboarding and confidentiality training Issue PPE (hard hat, FR clothing, gloves, safety glasses) Required initial safety training: OSHA 10 (if not already completed) Hazard Communication (GHS) LOTO Awareness Intro to Arc Flash & Shock Hazards Emergency Action Plan Intro to field documentation systems (Procore, Site Docs, etc.) Weeks 2–3 — Electrical Safety Foundations NFPA 70E detailed introduction: Shock boundaries Arc flash boundaries Approach limitations Required PPE categories Electrical hazard recognition Conduct a supervised jobsite safety audit: Area Safety Audit Jobsite Inspection Shadow a Safety Manager on: Daily Task Risk Assessment planning (TRA) PPE verification Permit‑to‑work processes Begin learning safety reporting formats Weeks 4–6 — Field Safety Operations Ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts Temporary power systems Panels, MCCs, transformers Cord and tool inspections Take part in incident/accident investigations: Root Cause Bone Fish Diagram Near Miss Reporting Assist with weekly toolbox talks Participate in LOTO application on training circuits Learn to read one‑lines for hazard identification Weeks 7–9 — Electrical Systems Competency In‑depth arc flash study (labels, boundaries, PPE, energy levels) Learn about testing and verification equipment (voltage testers, DMMs, phasing meters) Support Safety Manager in conducting: Energized work plan review Energized Electrical Work Permits (observation only) Weeks 10–12 — Leadership & Safety Management Lead small toolbox talk (with mentorship) Perform independent field audits (to be reviewed by Safety Manager) Participate in project‑specific safety planning: Kickoff meetings Project safety preparation Site‑specific safety plans (SSSPs) SDS sheets Safety Intern Participate in training and field audits Report hazards and document them accurately Maintain professional communication Support safety compliance tasks Maintain all issued PPE in clean and working order Mentor / Safety Director Provide daily oversight Coach on hazard recognition and communication Provide weekly check‑ins and progress feedback Project Teams Allow interns to observe and sit in on meetings Provide practical exposure to real job‑site operations Include the intern in safety planning conversations Technical Training Curriculum Core Training NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace OSHA 1910 Subpart S (Electrical) OSHA 1926 Subpart K (Construction Electrical) Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Arc flash hazard identification Permit‑required activities Fall Protection Practical Skills Use of voltage testers (demonstration only — not live circuits) PPE selection & inspection Root cause analysis (RCA) basics Safety observation reporting Temporary power safety Allowed vs Prohibited Intern Activities Interns May Participate In (Supervised) Jobsite safety audits Safety meeting facilitation JHA/JSA creation Data collection for safety reporting Interns May NOT Perform any energized electrical work Verify absence of voltage Perform LOTO on live equipment Enter arc flash boundaries without a fully qualified escort Use high‑voltage test equipment Sign off on permits or official safety approvals Documentation & Evaluation Documentation Binder / Digital Folder Contains Training records Daily field notes Audit checklists Hazard observations Final evaluation forms Evaluations Week 4 — Knowledge & field readiness Week 8 — Hazard recognition assessment Week 12 — Leadership and management review Program Outcomes Interns completing this program will be able to: Understand electrical hazards and how to control them. Conduct jobsite audits with minimal supervision. Develop and communicate JSAs/JHAs. Understand NFPA 70E requirements. Assist with safety documentation, permits, and compliance tasks. Enter an entry‑level safety technician, coordinator, or apprentice safety role.
