Job Summary: With overall guidance, the School Nurse collaborates as a vital participant in a student's comprehensive well-being, fostering both short-term and long-term health. Their role encompasses safeguarding student well-being, supporting optimal growth, and enhancing academic achievements.

Essential Job Functions

Implement policies, practices, and procedures as established in the School Health Manual and the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act.

Provide first aid care and other medically prescribed services for students and staff.

Develop Individual Health Plan (IHPs) for health conditions based on medical providers documentation.

Provide training to school staff with regard to individual student health needs, emergency care, medication administration, etc.

Coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency and other community resources.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Accurately maintain records and practices nursing standards of care as required by state or federal laws, and Union County Board of Education policies, and/or school-based requests, and adhere to confidentiality requirements of state and federal law.

2. Maintains an unencumbered nursing license throughout employment.

3. Prepares efficient and accurate reports as required by supervisor.

4. Maintains school health supplies and ensure that appropriate measures are in place to secure any/all regulated substances.

5. Conduct vision screens for students and follow up where necessary.

6. Applies remedial measures in response to identified deficiencies observed during audits.

7. Conducts home visits when appropriate.

8. Documents relevant health data, i.e., immunizations, health findings, office visits appropriately.

9. Assist with transportation based on student's 504/IEP.

10. Serves as a resource on health issues.

11. Initiates case management with students, as needed.

12. Participates in departmental, district level and other meetings/committees as directed by supervisor.

13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential

• Associate's degree in nursing • Bachelor's degree in nursing
• RN License with the North Carolina Board of Nursing or compact RN license (Unencumbered License) • Certified by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) within three years of hire date
• Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
• Valid driver's license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of health conditions and recommended treatment
• Thorough knowledge of child and adolescent growth and development
• Working knowledge of public health issues and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health agencies

Physical Requirements

Sedentary/Medium - Must be able to exert up to 15 lbs. of force occasionally, and up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 5 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift and/or carry 30lbs.

Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Vision: Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment.

Environmental Conditions: Varies from indoors exposure to outside weather conditions

Hazards: Uneven walking/working surfaces, communicable diseases, cleaning chemicals, lifting/carrying of materials, and power/hand-operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).
