General Manager — Hardware, Lumber & Building Materials

Taylorville, IL 62568 | On-site | Full-time | $50,000–$65,000 per year + quarterly bonus eligibility

R.P. Lumber is hiring a General Manager for our Taylorville, Illinois lumberyard and home-improvement store. This is the on-site leader of the location — responsible for the full operation, the team, the customer experience, and store financial results.

You will report to the District Manager. You will be expected to understand and perform showroom, yard, and back-office work, and to develop the people who keep the store running.

What You Will Do

Customer Service and Sales

• Lead by example at the sales counter, on the sales floor, and at the register
• Train and coach associates to deliver prompt, courteous, knowledgeable service
• Resolve customer concerns quickly
• Keep the showroom merchandised to company and local standards, including planograms, end caps, seasonal product, promotions, and price changes
• Make sure deliveries leave on time, complete, and in good condition
• Support contractor sales coverage so new business is developed and current accounts stay well served

Financial Performance, Payroll, and Inventory

• Drive sales and profit to meet or exceed budget
• Understand the numbers that move store performance and stay accountable for results
• Control costs and schedule labor to balance productivity and customer service
• Record sales, returns, transfers, and adjustments accurately and on time
• Keep inventory high enough to serve customers and in line with investment goals
• Make sure warehouse and yard teams receive and store product correctly
• Reduce shrinkage, damage, and theft through clean processes and secure high-theft items

Safety, Facilities, and Loss Prevention

• Model a safety-first culture for employees and customers
• Keep the location, equipment, and grounds safe, clean, and maintained
• Make sure ladders, forklifts, trucks, and other equipment are in safe working condition
• Lead and document regular safety meetings
• Apply company-approved security and loss-prevention practices
• Protect inventory from weather, poor stacking, loss, and theft

People Leadership and Communication

• Recruit, select, schedule, and train key people
• Publish work schedules on time and make sure hours worked are recorded correctly
• Give timely coaching and corrective feedback; do not ignore performance problems
• Mentor Retail Managers and other key employees
• Run monthly store meetings on performance, goals, promotions, events, problems, and safety
• Keep an open-door environment where people can raise issues and share ideas
• Help associates use the Company's ESS Resource Center
• Check and respond to company and customer email in a timely manner
• Report unusual occurrences, obstacles, and improvement ideas to the District Manager and other company leaders
• Follow company policy and protect confidential information
• Perform other related duties assigned by the District Manager or other qualified company leaders

What You Need to Have

• 3–5 years of management or supervisory experience in building materials, home improvement, hardware, lumber, or a related field — or an equivalent mix of education and experience
• Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage with limited supervision
• Working knowledge of retail operations, merchandising, inventory control, customer service, and store financials
• Strong product knowledge of building materials, lumber, and hardware, or the demonstrated ability to acquire it quickly through training
• Comfort using a point-of-sale system and other retail or business software; estimating software experience is a plus
• Enough math and business skill to read sales, margin, inventory, labor, and other operating data and use them to run the store
• Ability to work a flexible retail schedule, generally 50 or more hours per week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
• Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, including bending, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and frequently lifting or moving 50 to 100 pounds

Nice to Have

• Bachelor’s degree in business, retail management, construction, or a related field
• Experience as a store manager, assistant store manager, or retail manager in a lumberyard, hardware store, or home-improvement retailer
• Experience coaching a contractor sales effort, running planograms, managing inventory accuracy, or owning store P&L results
• Familiarity with forklifts, delivery operations, yard operations, and the safe storage of building materials

Pay and Benefits

Pay range: $50,000–$65,000 per year

This role is also eligible for the General Manager quarterly bonus.

Schedule and Work Location

This is an on-site position. The General Manager leads showroom, yard, and back-office operations. Evening, weekend, and holiday work is required based on business needs.
