Staff Accountant-Full Time Days

Job Summary The Staff Accountant I supports the financial operations for Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC), which includes hospitals, physician practices, and a variety of other healthcare services. This intermediate-level role is responsible for preparing accurate financial reports, analyzing account activity, supporting audits and budgeting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and healthcare regulations. Essential Functions & Responsibilities Prepares routine to intermediate journal entries and reconciles inter-company transactions. Reconciles bank statements and other balance sheet account schedules. Reviews and reconciles sub-system postings to general ledger accounts for accuracy and completeness. Prepares monthly financial statements at both the entity and departmental levels in accordance with GAAP. Analyzes balance sheet accounts, reserves, and accruals, making necessary adjustments as needed. Performs monthly income statement variance analysis and assists operational leaders in understanding financial results. Assists in the preparation and review of annual budgets and forecasts, including supporting schedules and data analysis. Prepares and reviews schedules and reports required for internal and external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting. Researches accounting standards and healthcare-specific regulations to ensure proper treatment of transactions. Monitors compliance with internal financial controls and recommends improvements where needed. Assists with month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting. Collaborates with departments to provide financial insights and respond to reporting needs. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree is required. Preferably in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Minimum of three years of accounting experience is required. Strong knowledge of GAAP and familiarity with healthcare accounting standards and financial reporting. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel); experience with Workday is preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly.
