Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 14 weeks Shift: Full-time day/night variable shifts (3x12 hours) scheduled as needed, including weekends and holidays, plus 2 On Call shifts per 4-week period Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Two years of acute hospital experience, with at least one year of experience in an emergency department License: Current Registered Nurse licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (Must be AHA or RQI) Must-Have: - Two years acute hospital experience as a Registered Nurse - One year emergency department experience as a Registered Nurse Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. This role involves applying appropriate interventions and evaluating patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations. Utilizing the principles of relationship-based care, the ED RN alleviates anxiety, provides information, and addresses pain, discomfort, and safety. This position requires assessing the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups and their families. The ED RN connects with patients and families during triage, identifying the initial management of patients and assigning priorities of care based on triage standards. Building rapport with patients and families involves addressing comfort needs, listening carefully, assessing nonverbal communication, and providing frequent updates. The ED RN conducts primary assessments of critical need and documents any major deviations from norms for all age groups within acceptable time frames. Secondary assessments utilize direct observation, patient and family interviews, EMS reports, and data collection to identify necessary interventions. The ED RN assesses psychosocial needs, documents any suspicions of domestic violence or abuse, and reassesses patients to identify responses to treatment or changes in condition. Encouraging mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members is essential for achieving optimal patient outcomes. The ED RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. Safeguarding public safety through infection prevention strategies is a personal responsibility of the ED RN. Preparation of patients, parents, or families for diagnostic procedures and treatments, along with making appropriate referrals for post-emergency care, is also part of this role. The ED RN teaches patients what is needed for continued care and healing at home while assessing learning styles to maximize understanding. By asking questions, the ED RN evaluates retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. Understanding what is most important to the patient and family is crucial. The ED RN acknowledges that the patient and family are the central focus of all care and services. Creating a Healing Environment is regarded as a key element of professional nursing practice. The ED RN keeps patients and significant others informed about the process of care and anticipates their needs. Maintaining awareness of patient conditions and updating communication boards throughout the ED stay is essential for patient care.
