Forensic Psychiatric Attendant - Security & Care

Job Description CLASS TITLE: Psychiatric Attendant Responsibilities Provides on‑ward security functions over forensic patients or residents of secure‑care areas, including on‑ward surveillance, escorting patients to off‑ward activities, investigating misbehavior, monitoring behavior during meals, intervening during crises to prevent self‑injury or injury to others, and applying restraints or assisting nursing staff in secluding violent patients. Monitors patients in seclusion; searches patient clothing, individual rooms, and ward living areas for dangerous objects, contraband, or unusual conditions; prevents patient escapes. Provides direct care, treatment, and/or programs to forensic patients and promotes activities on‑board and off‑board through participation, interaction, and involvement (e.g., personal hygiene, grooming, room maintenance, social dining, independent functioning, washing clothes, one‑to‑one sessions, meal assistance, dressing, bathing, shaving, feeding, and recreational activities). Assists co‑workers in maintaining sanitary living conditions by performing general housekeeping duties (e.g., cleaning floors, picking up trash, bagging laundry). Prepares reports and/or documentation regarding patient and unit activities, including significant, unusual, or appropriate patient behavior in progress notes, restraint/seclusion logs, daily ward logs, shift change and incident reports, work orders, stocking supplies, and unit communication logs. Attends in‑service training programs; participates in interdisciplinary team meetings; attends weekly staff meetings. Responds to patient needs in emergency situations (e.g., fires or riots). Qualifications Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition and subtraction and in reading and writing common English vocabulary; high school graduate or G.E.D. required for Oakwood Forensic Center. Knowledge of agency and hospital policies and procedures related to forensic client/patient care, ward security, and client custodial care. Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; deal with problems involving several variables within a familiar context; read short sentences with concrete vocabulary.
