Job Description and Duties

The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Geotechnical Services (GS) is looking to hire a Senior Transportation Engineer Specialist (Sr TE Spec) in the Office of Geotechnical Design Policies and Practices (OGDPP). Under the direction of the Office Chief, the Senior Transportation Engineer will serve as a geotechnical earth retaining system specialist (ERS), responsible for developing and maintaining ERS related guidance and providing technical support to Geotechnical Services (GS) design staff on projects. The incumbent shall be well versed in Department’s geotechnical policies and practices in order to assist staff at various stages of projects including planning investigations, evaluating analyses and design procedures. The incumbent shall lead or collaborate on technical teams and committees who are responsible for developing proposed ERS design guidance to be used on both Caltrans and local agency projects. The specialist will also assist in evaluating proposed research and innovative technologies related to ERS. The specialist will lead or assist with the development and delivery of training for GS staff and collaborate with cross-functional units.

1. Describe your education, college coursework and training in geotechnical engineering related to Earth Retaining Systems (ERS) that you completed and is relevant to this position.

2. Describe your experience involving geotechnical design of

ERS. Describe experience in total years, approximate number of geotechnical reports relating to special-design ERS, and various types of special-designed Earth Retaining Systems.

3. Describe your experience with geotechnical software used in designing Earth Retaining Systems. Be specific by identifying the software used and years of experience using it.

4. Describe your experience working on formal technical teams or committees that you led or participated on to develop or improve a geotechnical standard or design method. List the specific technical team or committee and the technical standard or design method you helped develop.

5. Discuss your experience in developing and delivering presentations or training to a group of people on geotechnical related topics. List specific examples.

6. Describe your experience in writing technical papers for a publication relating to Earth Retaining Systems. Please list the technical paper(s).
