JOB TITLE: High School Mandarin TeacherSTATUS: Full Time, ExemptREPORTS TO: Site Director/CoordinatorORGANIZATION OVERVIEWVaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent.POSITION OVERVIEWThe High School Mandarin Teacher is responsible for providing rigorous, engaging, and standards-aligned instruction that develops students' proficiency in Mandarin while fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and global cultural awareness. Through research-based instructional practices, differentiated learning experiences, and meaningful assessment, the teacher creates a safe, inclusive, and academically challenging classroom where all students are empowered to achieve high levels of success. The teacher maintains accurate student records, monitors academic progress, and communicates regularly with students, families, and colleagues to support student achievement.As an active member of the Vaughn Next Century Learning Center community, the High School Mandarin Teacher collaborates with colleagues to strengthen instructional programs, participates in professional learning and school committees, and contributes to a positive school culture aligned with Vaughn's mission and values. The ideal candidate is fully bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural in Mandarin and English, demonstrates high expectations for all students, effectively integrates technology into instruction, and is committed to preparing students with the linguistic, cultural, and academic skills necessary to succeed in college, career, and a globally connected world.RESPONSIBILITIESUnder the direction of the Administrator/Coordinator, the responsibilities include, but are not limited to:Deliver effective classroom instruction in MandarinProvide effective classroom instruction with primary focus on the incorporation of the Common Core State Standards, research, argumentation, and inquiry appropriate to the subject matterProvide content-related and appropriate instruction to students in a diversified mannerProvide a classroom environment which promotes active learning of the subject matterExhibit knowledge of performance-based instruction and assessmentDevelop and implement lesson plans and activities to fulfill the requirements of the class curriculumPrepares lessons in instructional formats that accommodate differences in individual student needsMaintain an up-to-date online gradebook with feedback for students on progressAccount for student attendance and punctualityCollaborate with department teachers to plan and integrate the Core Knowledge curriculum, when possible and appropriateEstablish positive guidance techniques rather than negative methods to correct and influence student behaviorCollaborates with peers and support staffCreates an effective environment for learningEstablishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve an effective learning environment in the classroom.Utilizes different instructional strategies to meet the needs of a wide variety of studentsMaintains a safe, nurturing, and structured classroom environmentHas a working knowledge of basic computer applications, interactive boards and technology available in the classroomParticipates in department level meetingsParticipates in staff developmentEngages in Governing CommitteesCollaborates in High School Advisory ProgramParticipates in SST and IEP meetingsCommunicates with support staff, administrators, team teachers and parents about student progressCompletes and updates paperwork to ensure that student records are currentWorks beyond the parameters of a regular school day to assure the success of the programDesires to work closely with students, colleagues and community in modeling and teaching the values of Vaughn Next Century Learning CenterMaintain appropriate records of student progress and other school recordsSKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICSPossess a work ethic and personal belief system that aligns with the mission and vision of Vaughn Next Century Learning CenterExcellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact and forge relationships with students, parents, staff and community membersExtremely high standards for student achievementDemonstrated relentlessness to meet organizational goalsSelf-directed with the ability to work both autonomously and in teamsFully bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural in Mandarin/EnglishEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEMust have a valid California Single Subject teaching credential with an authorization in Foreign Language: Mandarin requiredHave BCLAD, CLAD, or EL Authorization requiredExperience with Project Based Learning preferredBachelor degree in Mandarin or related field preferredSALARY AND BENEFITS$70,412.16 - $121,843.36184 days of work per year10 Sick Days per year (accrued on a per payroll basis)Eligible for competitive health benefits (medical, dental, vision)100% employer covered life insurance100% employer covered long-term disability insuranceAccess to Vaughn Perks, an employee benefits hub with access to discounts and servicesCalSTRS contribution for CalSTRS-eligible positionsADDITIONAL INFORMATIONUpon receiving an offer of employment:Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ)Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employmentWill be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employmentVaughn Next Century Learning Center does not discriminate on the basis of race, religious creed, color, ethnic or national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, uniformed service member status, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, marital status, sex, pregnancy, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected basis under the law.
