Dean of College of Architecture, Planning and Design

Department : Office of theProvost Salary : Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs andProvost, the Dean serves as the Chief Academic and AdministrativeOfficer of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design.The Dean is responsible for providing energetic, visionary, andeffective leadership in the following areas:

Academic Leadership and Strategic Planning: Theseresponsibilities include directing and overseeing the programs ofthe College as well as developing the strategic directions of theCollege in concert with the University’s Strategic Plan. The Deanarticulates the long-range vision, specific strategies, anddetailed administrative and fiscal provisions to ensure thecontinued excellence of the College programs and faculty. The Deanworks closely with the University’s executive leadership and withother University of Houston Deans on multidisciplinary hiring andon research and teaching programs. The successful candidate willpromote the University and the Hines College and activelyparticipate in hands-on management and open decision-making in aculture of shared governance.
Faculty Appointments: The Dean of the Hines College isresponsible for the recruitment, appointment, reappointment,promotion, and tenure of faculty in the College. The Dean worksthrough the established appointment, promotion, and tenureprocesses of the College and the University and is responsible formaintaining the integrity of these processes. The Dean works withthe faculty to implement long-range recruiting strategies for theHines College, formulated in collaboration with the Provost. TheDean is responsible for meeting or exceeding the University’srecruiting objectives for quality and productivity withintentionality to maintain disciplinary representation across theCollege's design disciplines and strategic goals.
Budgetary and Administrative Oversight: The Dean is responsiblefor overseeing the College’s budget and for the strategicallocation of resources in the College. The Dean allocates theresources necessary to support the faculty research agenda,facilitate extramurally funded research, and fund graduate studentsand programs, and the Dean is responsible for the establishment ofeffective internal cost controls within the College. The Dean isresponsible for coordinating the activities of program directors,the Hines College faculty, associate and assistant Deans, andstaff. And the Dean is responsible for the allocation of academicand research facilities, planning for future facilities’ needs,overseeing non-faculty staffing decisions and organization, anddeveloping collaborative teaching and research programs with otherUH colleges and divisions.
Stewardship and Development: The Dean plays a pivotal role inrepresenting the needs of the Hines College and UH to externalconstituents and donors - on regional, national, and internationallevels. The Dean has primary responsibility for articulating thephilanthropic aspirations of the Hines College in conjunction withthe long-range strategic plans of the University. The Dean workscollaboratively with the President’s leadership team and otheracademic and University leaders across campus in planning for theCollege’s fundraising priorities and goals. In executing thoseplans the Dean engages proactively with the University’sdevelopment staff, development officers and liaisons, volunteeradvisory boards, and with the College’s own academic leadership. Inaddition, the Dean plays a critical role in ensuring thatphilanthropic donations are well stewarded in accordance with donorexpectations, address needs within the College, and arecommunicated fully and in a timely manner with both the College andUniversity communities.

The next Dean of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture andDesign will possess a distinguished record of academic andprofessional achievement, superior interpersonal and managementskills, and a demonstrated commitment to UH’s mission, vision, andstudents. Have an outstanding record of scholarly and/or creativeachievement commensurate with appointment as a full professor inone of the College’s programs;
Possess a terminal degree in architecture, design, or a closelyrelated field;
Possess the ability to serve as an engaging fundraiser andadvocate on behalf of the Hines College at the local, national, andinternational levels; and to further develop the College’s externalrelationships to not only increase philanthropic donations but tostimulate productive partnerships with externalconstituencies;
Have proven people skills and be a highly effective listener andcommunicator with both academic and non-academic audiences;
Be a seasoned and decisive but also a compassionate, empatheticservant leader with strong organizational and consensus-buildingskills, integrity, and the ability to inspire and lead a highlyaccomplished faculty with diverse interests;
Demonstrate a commitment to assessment and accountabilitymeasures that will help to guide and enhance strategic planninggoals in accordance with UH’s Strategic Plan, and to appropriatelytrack and articulate the College and University’s nationalcompetitiveness;
Bring an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to the Deanposition and serve as a catalyst for new and compelling initiativesin the College;
Demonstrate familiarity with, and a forward-looking perspectiveon, emerging technologies including artificial intelligence,computational design, and design automation, and their implicationsfor both the practice and pedagogy of architecture anddesign;
to the personal and educational enrichment of itsfaculty, staff, and students; and to the passion for the College’srole in ensuring the success of every member of itscommunity.
