Job Description Summary
Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal‑directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.
Provides nursing care to patients using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation). Directs and leads other assigned team members and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to provide age/developmentally appropriate care in accordance with nursing standards of care and practice. Provides patient/family centered care using the nursing process and focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. This includes assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation of interventions, coordination of care, health teaching, promotion, and evaluation of goals and interventions consistent with the policies of MUSC. Maintains a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting, and professional behavior. Demonstrates the ability to function in a professional setting through active participation in a professional practice model, shared governance, adherence to standards of care, peer review, and professional development that promotes leadership, clinical excellence, effective team skills, and accountability for actions and critical thinking.
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and a minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required. A Bachelor of Nursing degree is preferred.
Licensure and Certification
Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking.
Ability to climb stairs, work indoors, work outdoors in temperature extremes, work from elevated areas, and work in confined/cramped spaces.
Ability to perform kneeling positions, bend at the waist, twist at the waist, squat, and perform pinching operations.
Ability to perform gross motor activities with fingers and hands, grip, fine manipulation, reach overhead, and repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
Ability to use both legs and lower extremities for balance and coordination.
Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted, and lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/ to floor 36 inches unassisted.
Ability to lift from 36” to overhead up to 25 lbs.; capability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force.
Ability to perform essential sensory functions: vision 20/40 corrected, color discrimination, depth perception, peripheral vision, hearing acuity, tactile sensitivity, olfactory function, and respirator qualification.
Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, in a latex-safe environment, and maintain good olfactory sensory function for selected positions.
Physical Requirements (Detailed)
Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
Proficiency in manual dexterity and fine motor skills for tasks such as taking patient vitals, administering injections, or conducting physical exams.
Capacity to lift and move patients or medical equipment as needed.
Visual acuity and color perception to accurately read medical charts, documents, and monitors.
Auditory ability to effectively communicate with patients and colleagues, and to perceive important sounds such as alarms or patient instructions.
Stamina and resilience to handle the physical and emotional demands of providing patient care, including long shifts and potentially stressful situations.
Mobility to navigate clinical environments, including moving between patient rooms, offices, and other areas of the facility.
Compliance with infection control protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
Additional Job Description
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Refer to policy A141 for more details. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required. Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
