Distribution Engineering Associate

Associate Distribution Engineer - contract role in Greensboro, NC.

OVERVIEW

The successful candidate will develop work packages for overhead, underground, and URD projects, using customer GIS and WMS systems such as GE Smallworld, Bentley Expert Designer, and Maximo. Candidates should be comfortable in both field and office settings, as some field work may be required. Selected candidates will receive training in customer engineering and construction standards. This role involves coordination of conflicting utilities, field engineering design requirements, design of big packages for cable/conduit projects in dense urban environments, work permit development, easements and ROW applications, and design of mainline vault medium voltage switchgear, network system design, and distribution system protection and coordination.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems operating from 4kV through 138kV, primarily for programmatic work such as overloaded transformers, inspection and maintenance, joint use, and inspection reports.

Comply with company and client safety requirements as well as design and quality expectations.

Travel to sites as needed, perform inspections, and return to the office to perform engineering design work.

Perform engineering calculations such as structural analysis for wood pole loading, guying calculations, specifying conductor sags and tensions for recommended spans, and calculation of voltage drop and flicker.

Develop permitting documents for different AHJs.

Provide engineering support during construction, including post‑construction reviews to ensure all applicable engineering and construction standards have been met.

Conduct root cause analysis of outages and mitigation using engineering principles and design.

REQUIREMENTS

Completed Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial preferred) from an ABET‑accredited institution.

Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).

Ability to use a personal vehicle; some customer‑related travel may be anticipated (travel will be reimbursed at IRS‑approved rates).

Willingness to perform both field and office work; ability to work in outdoor environments on occasion.

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, SOCKET, Spida‑Calc or similar.

Experience using CAD tools, MicroStation, and/or GIS.

Experience with NESC.

Experience with design standards.
