Fire-EMT Full-Time

Isle of Wight County Fire Rescue is seeking interested applicants for a full‑time Fire Medic IV (Paramedic) position. Under general supervision the purpose of the position is to provide Emergency Medical Services (EMS), fire protection in emergency and non‑emergency situations. Employees in this classification perform skilled work. The position is responsible for operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims, and performing advanced emergency care, including the administration of life‑sustaining treatment to patients on‑site and while en route to the hospital. Performs related work as required.

Responsibilities

Respond to calls to provide emergency medical assistance offering basic and advanced life support care; drive ambulances in response to emergency calls and transport patients to/from medical facilities; perform primary and secondary patient assessments; determine blood pressures, pulses, respiratory rates, capillary refill, and other vital signs; ascertain patients’ medical history, complaints, and symptoms; establish and maintain open airways; ventilate non‑breathing persons; administer cardio‑pulmonary resuscitation to victims of cardiac arrest; operate a semi‑automatic defibrillator and initiate delivery of shocks when prompted in accordance with local protocols; operate life support equipment.

Provide advanced life support care to critical ambulance patients in accordance with regional and local medical protocols and/or on‑line medical control; intubate patients requiring advanced airway management using endotracheal tube and/or IGel; start intravenous lines and intravenous fluid therapy; administer drugs necessary for the treatment of acute medical conditions pursuant to physician orders; perform other advanced life support procedures upon approval and direction of the medical director and/or hospital‑based physician/medical control physician.

Respond to fire alarms; drive fire apparatus and/or operate fire pumps; fight fires; perform rescues of persons trapped inside burning structures; lift, carry, drag, lay, and connect hose lines and appliances; assist in loading and unloading ladders; perform salvage and overhaul operations; direct traffic and establish safety zones.

Respond to incidents involving hazardous materials; initiate requests for appropriate assistance; may provide emergency decontamination and/or treatment to contaminated victims.

Install smoke detectors; perform pre‑fire plans.

Assist in planning, developing, and coordinating departmental training; perform physical fitness training; participate in a continuous training program to improve competence in firefighting, medical clinical work and in rescue vehicle service and operation; maintain knowledge of new or modified operational protocols and procedures; study street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.

Inspect and test fire apparatus and ambulances and their emergency equipment; maintain proper inventory of equipment and supplies for County EMS and fire units; clean and sanitize equipment; ensure that equipment is in proper and good working order; make routine adjustments and minor repairs/maintenance.

Complete and maintain accurate records, forms, and reports for various administrative, operational, and training activities; code, edit, and submit Virginia Fire Incident Reports and EMS Pre‑hospital Patient Care Reports; prepare and/or type memorandums and general correspondence, forms, reports, and purchase orders; maintain files on personnel, equipment, and operations.

Conduct station drills; attend multi‑company drills.

Observe all approved safety and health policies and procedures pertaining to work activities and perform all work tasks in a safe and healthy manner in accordance with County policy.

Physical Demands

Tasks involve the ability to exert very heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally very heavier items (100 pounds or over).

Work Environment

Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.

Minimum Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent

One to Two (1‑2) years of related work experience; preferred

Supplemented by vocational/technical training in emergency medical services, firefighting.

Licenses and Certifications

Driver’s License valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Certification as a Paramedic by the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Emergency Medical Services

CPR, Hazardous Materials - Awareness/Operations, and EVOC

Released (within 3 months of hire) and meet all certification requirements to practice as an ALS provider per the County’s Operational Medical Director.

Certification as a Firefighter II by the Virginia Department Fire Programs

Successful completion of designated NIMS‑compliant Incident Command System courses (NIMS:ICS 100.200,700,800).

Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and DMV records check prior to employment.

Successful passing of the NFPA 1582 medical exam as part of a conditional offer of employment.

Benefits

Certification pay of $7,000 annually is provided for certified Paramedics in addition to the base salary of $65,000.

All County employees may be required to report to serve our customers during emergency conditions. While some will perform their regular duties, others may be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties from their regular jobs. Employees will either be deemed essential personnel and provide services that must continue regardless of or pursuant to a state of emergency or will be deemed nonessential personnel that will be required to report to work in an emergency if they receive assignment to shelter duty or other duty.
