This Phlebotomist I role focuses on safely and accurately collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting efficient laboratory workflow. You will perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, ensure proper labeling and documentation, maintain specimen integrity, and assist with troubleshooting and workflow improvement in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment.

Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.

• Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients before and during collection.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes.
• Follow different handling and transport procedures as outlined by specific protocols to preserve specimen quality.
• Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as required.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to callers when appropriate, helping to satisfy inquiries.
• Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.

Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.

• At least 6 months of hands-on phlebotomy experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 0-2 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory setting.

Experience working in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment.

• Comfort handling various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
• This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you regularly interact with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems. The environment requires strict adherence to safety protocols and regulatory standards such as OSHA and DEP, as well as careful handling and storage of specimens at appropriate temperatures. You will frequently use computers and Microsoft Office Suite to update patient information, verify orders, and document specimen handling. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chesapeake, VA.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
