Director of Development
The Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Office of Development (VP&S OOD), a part of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), is dedicated to facilitating relationships that support the vision and mission of CUIMC and VP&S: to transform health by driving discovery, advancing care, and educating leaders.
The Director of Development will report to the Executive Director for Development (ED) and will manage multi-level assignments as well as work closely with the ED on specific development projects. The incumbent will serve as internal and external liaison to CUIMC related areas and programs within the Department of Medicine and other clinical areas as needed. The incumbent will independently manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects consisting of individuals, foundations, and corporations, developing strategies and cultivating relationships that lead to solicitation and stewardship of major gifts. The incumbent will be the liaison for other centers, institutes, and programs as needed in the Health Sciences, primarily within the Department of Medicine. The incumbent will play an active role in donor-related events for areas covered and act as a liaison for external groups including advisory boards, support groups or other community outreach programs as assigned. The incumbent will participate in prospect assessment and assignment processes as well as work with the team to prepare annual objectives for the upcoming academic year. The incumbent will work closely with colleagues on joint projects with overlapping faculty and/or donor interests.
Responsibilities
Manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects consisting of individuals, foundations, and corporations. Develop strategies and cultivate relationships that lead to solicitation and stewardship of major gifts of $100,000 and above. – 40%
Serve as liaison to CUIMC related areas and programs, including critical liaison to the Department of Medicine and other areas within Health Sciences. – 40%
Participate in prospect assessment and assignment processes. – 10%
Annually prepare objectives for the upcoming academic year (e.g., dollars to be raised, solicitations planned, and cultivation/stewardship activities) to discuss with the Executive Director of Development so that mutually agreed criteria can be established. – 5%
Other duties and special projects as assigned. – 5%
Minimum Qualifications
~ Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications
~ Master's degree preferred

Proven ability to work successfully in a campaign environment with major gift solicitation
Ability to develop meaningful and collaborative relationships across all functions and levels within the organization and relate well to an intellectually-sophisticated community
Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work proactively, independently and as a team, in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor
Adept at problem solving and using judgment in situations requiring initiative and tact
High level of self-confidence, creativity, enthusiasm, engagement, self-motivation, willingness to be innovative and energy to undertake diverse responsibilities
Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills; and have ability to exercise excellent judgment, tact, confidentiality and diplomacy in all interactions
Ability to work with minimal supervision and maintain a high level of confidentiality
Must be able to accurately handle diverse projects and a large volume of detailed work simultaneously, and use good judgment in prioritizing work
Experience with basic research
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (including SharePoint), Development databases, and use of prospect management tracking systems
This position requires work beyond regular hours, including evenings and weekends, as projects and events require
