The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Associate Transportation Engineer in the Public Works Department!
The current vacancy is assigned to the Measure FF group within the Public Works Department and will function as a project manager and technical lead in the transportation engineering field to deliver a wide variety of capital improvement projects.
Manage consultant teams through all phases of project development, including planning, concept development, public outreach and engagement, detailed design, bid and award, and construction. and quality management.
Ensure compliance with City policies guidance, engineering standards and codes, MUTCD, Caltrans guidance, ADA/PROWAG, NACTO, and Vision Zero principles.
Oversee construction management and inspection consultants and perform project implementation and field coordination, working closely with City Engineering and Transportation Divisions, other City departments, external contractors, and utility partners to ensure successful construction, installation, and close-out of Measure FF improvement projects.
Serve as project leader for administrative and technical work, and ensure projects meet Measure FF budget and performance expectations through cost estimating, budgeting, resource planning, and contributing to capital planning, reporting, and accountability requirements tied to the ballot measure.
Perform additional transportation engineering assignments as needed to support the Transportation and/or Engineering Divisions, including support for council requests, coordination on citywide multimodal and safety initiatives, and coordination with sidewalk repair program.

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in civil or traffic engineering and three years of increasingly responsible traffic engineering experience, one year of which was at a level equivalent to the Assistant Transportation Engineer class.

Other requirements include possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or a professional Civil Engineer as well as a valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

A master's degree in Transportation Engineering/Planning or a related field is desirable.

Retirement
City employees are included in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is either 2% at age 62 (PEPRA members) or 2.7% at age 55 (Classic members).

Employees may contribute up to the IRS maximum on a pre-tax basis.
Medical Plans
Employees can choose coverage under Kaiser HMO or Sutter Health Plan HMO. Employees who have medical coverage under another group plan may choose to waive City-provided medical coverage and receive a monthly stipend.
Dental Plan
The City provides group dental benefits through Delta Dental of California. The City contributes up to the family coverage for the plan, which covers 90% of the dental charges up to $3,000 annually per person. Employees who have dental coverage under another group plan may choose to waive City-provided dental coverage and receive a monthly stipend.
Life Insurance
The City provides employees with a $50,000 Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment policy. Employees have the option to purchase additional term life insurance up to a maximum of $300,000.
New employees accrue 80 hours of vacation annually, with an increase to 120 hours annually after 3 or 4 years of service, depending on eligibility for Administrative Leave (see ).

Funding for Measure FF projects will cover a variety of improvements, including streets and sidewalk repairs (anticipated 60% of Measure FF funding), safety improvements including pedestrian and bicycle safety (anticipated 30%), and environmental enhancements in the form of green infrastructure to treat stormwater runoff (anticipated 10%).
