Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are advanced practice nurses responsible for administering anesthesia and monitoring patients during surgeries and other medical procedures. Due to their specialized skill set, they are experts in critical care and airway management.

Ensures patient identification and obtains appropriate health history.

Documents pre-anesthetic evaluation.

Obtains informed consent for anesthesia.

Selects prepares and administers anesthetic agents or other agents administered in management of anesthetic care.

Informs anesthesiologist and/or surgeon of changes in patient's condition.

Provides anesthesia induction, maintenance, emergence, and post anesthesia care.

Provides mechanical ventilation.

Obtains blood samples. Provides perianesthetic invasive and non-invasive monitoring utilizing current standards and techniques.

Recognizes and treats cardiac dysrhythmias through use of perianesthetic electrocardiogram monitoring.

Evaluates patient response during emergence from anesthesia. Institutes pharmacological or supportive treatment to insure adequacy of patient recovery from anesthesia and adjuvant drugs.

Provides post anesthesia follow-up, report, and evaluation of patient's response to anesthesia and for potential anesthetic complication.

Cleans and sterilizes equipment and notifies supervisor of needed equipment adjustments/repairs.

May perform patient care to the extent necessary to maintain clinical expertise, competency and licensing necessary to fulfill job responsibilities and to direct the provision of care on the unit.

Solid understanding of current anesthesia practices and techniques.

Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in oral communication, written communication, interpersonal relations, customer service, adaptability, and change management

Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing PC applications

Bachelor's degree in Nursing or relevant undergraduate degree. Graduate of accredited nurse anesthesia program

RN License required

Valid state APRN Recognition preferred

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) required

License/Registration/Certification Requirements:

ACLS (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) (Including courses offered through SSH), Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) (Including courses offered through SSH), Certified RN Anesthetist - Board of Registration in Nursing (Massachusetts), RN-Registered Nurse - Board of Registration in Nursing (Massachusetts)
