DEFINITION AND DUTIES:

Under direction of the Ambulance Director, Ambulance Assistant Director, and/or Field Supervisor is responsible to provide paramedic level patient care in accordance with the GuideLink Center and Johnson County protocols and under the auspices of the medical director or medical control physician designee.

Knowledge of:

EMS and the operations of the GuideLink Center and an advanced ambulance service

Paramedic level pre-hospital medical care practices

County roads, landmarks, use of maps and route planning

Traffic laws and regulations in the State of Iowa

Safe work practices and emergency vehicle operations

English language to include grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary

Ability to:

Be detail-oriented and accurate while performing duties

Operate an emergency vehicle safely in all weather conditions

Represent Johnson County and GuideLink Center and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner

Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and competing priorities

Maintain strict confidentiality and security of information as appropriate

Keep accurate records and reports

Interact effectively with persons from widely divergent backgrounds, interests and points of view

Provide customer service that is courteous and responsive

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, health care professionals, supervisors, department heads and members of the public

Use a computer for the purpose of data entry, word processing, presentations, email and Internet

Operate common office equipment such as calculators, fax machines, photocopiers and multi-line telephones

Receive and transmit messages via a two-way radio

Have clarity of speech, hearing, and writing which permits effective communication

Follow oral and written instructions

Organize and present factual information and ideas clearly and concisely, in oral and written form

Handle low to high levels of stress, meet deadlines and solve problems appropriate to the position

Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time

Lift, move, carry, push and/or pull a minimum of 60 pounds and occasionally up to 125 pounds

Sit, squat, kneel, crawl, jump, twist, reach, bend, stoop, stand, and step into and out of an ambulance

Have sufficient personal mobility to complete work at various locations

Endure exposure to adverse weather conditions and terrains while conducting field work

Handle potential exposure to harmful blood and body fluids, infectious disease, harmful chemicals and drugs

Have sufficient manual dexterity to make handwritten notations and which permits moderate use of a keyboard and mouse

Have sufficient vision which permits light to moderate production and review of a wide variety of materials both in electronic and hard copy forms

Work flexible schedule and occasional overtime as needed

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate or equivalent and successful completion of the prescribed course curricula at an approved paramedic program as determined by the Iowa State Bureau of EMS and successful completion of at least 300 hours of classroom instruction, 150 hours of clinical experience, and 150 hours of ambulance/rescue field experience.

Special requirements: Must pass background check. Current EMT-Paramedic certification in the State of Iowa and current ACLS provider and BCLS provider certifications. As a mandatory reporter, maintain approved training on child and dependent adult abuse reporting requirements. Valid driver’s license and insurable under county liability coverage. Safe driving record.

SPECIFIC DUTIES: to be performed satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Assist Mobile Crisis with intake process, assessing vital signs and basic medical assessment as needed.

Provide prompt evaluation and treatment for individuals presenting with acute symptoms or distress.

Follow GuideLink Center protocol to determine if a patient is medically stable to remain at GuideLink Center.

Provide a safe, medically supervised space for individuals withdrawing from alcohol or other substances.

Assist with fluid/medication administration in the detoxification process.

Assist with JCAS assigned duties when available.

Respond to request for service and/or calls for service as directed.

Perform duties of an EMT-Paramedic as defined in service protocols approved by the medical director.

Complete and submit patient care report, billing sheet and other related documentation.

Contribute to training of new employees to maintain a high standard of care.

Participate in training/professional development activities and work related meetings as requested.

Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with approved policies, procedures, safety practices and the collective bargaining agreement.

Transports patients to their respective destination.

Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.
